When you have your soil and pot completely prepared, you will need to fertilize it. You can add some high quality fertilizer or cow manure. There are a large variety of fertilizers available. Use organic if you want to keep your fruits and vegetables organic.

You could also use compost. A compost pile is a great idea. Use the leaves your rake up and add in food scraps, eggshells, and other biodegradable materials for your compost. This will break down and turn into nutrient rich soil.

If you are worried about your soil, have it tested. A soil tester kit can be easy to use and you can do it your self. This way you don’t have to worry about your soil being nutrient deficient because you can just add the necessary nutrients according to the results.
