A Guide on Caring for Flowers

Everyone of us love receiving flowers whether fresh flowers or silk flower. One of the attractions of flowers is their fleeting beauty that makes them great gifts. They are also a great way to bring warmth, joy and happiness. The only problem about fresh flowers is that they never seem to last and we usually want the blooms to last as long as possible.

Fortunately, there are many little things that you can do to lengthen the life span of the beautiful floral design your flower arrangements, floral bouquet and even wedding flowers and wedding flower bouquet. You should using proper flower care routines to keep the flowers from dying awfully fast and to even prolong their life span.

One should use only clean containers, in which to place your floral arrangement. In order to avoid additional water loss, a vase that is proportionate to the bouquet size should be used.

Warm water should be used because flowers take up warm water more readily than cold water. It is also preferable to add preservative or flower food to the water. It will treat the water, nourish the flowers and make the water more suitable for flowers, as it keeps the bacteria away. Floral foods and flower preservatives can be purchased from the florist in your locale or garden centers.

The stems of the flowers should be cut at an angle under water to expose fresh flower stem. Cutting them at an angle will give them more surface area to absorb nutrients through. Cutting the stems under water is important because it prevents air from getting into the veins in the stem of the flower, an air bubble in the stem would prevent the flower from getting water and nutrients.

Make certain that only the flower’s stem is under water. Do not allow leaves to be under the water level since that could cause them to rot. Also, never overcrowd the flowers; you should allow enough air to circulate between each flower.

Avoid putting the flowers in direct sunlight, over television sets, radiators or any other heat producing objects that will rob the flowers off its moisture. Also, remove dead leaves promptly to keep them from contaminating the water. The water should be changed at least every other day, every day if possible and it is also a good idea to re-cut the flower stems but remember to once again cut them at an angle and under water.

The next time you buy flowers for your home in your local flower shop or online flower delivery services or receive flowers from someone, always take a couple of minutes a day to care for them to easily double or even triple the life of your flowers.
