Traveling with pets, without proper planning and preparation can be a night-mare for both of you. Depending upon your destination, the preparations are similar: have your pet examined to ensure it is healthy enough for travel, obtain the proper paperwork, pack for your pet’s needs, train your pet for traveling and if needed, have your pet groomed. By following these 7 tips, you and your pet can have a safe and enjoyable trip.
1. Have your pet examined by your vet; verify it’s healthy enough for travel, that their vaccinations are up to date and obtain a Health Certificate and a Rabies certificate. Vaccinations vary from country to country so let your vet know if you’re traveling out of the country. You should also research the destination country as to other requirements for traveling with pets there.
2. Paperwork required for traveling with pets is usually the same whether traveling by air, rail, ship or road: health & rabies certificate, vaccination history and sometimes; proof of ownership.
3. Pack some of your pets’ favorite toys, bowls, blankets, food, leash and water. Make sure your pet has a collar (check it for wear and fit) with ID and rabies tags on it. Don’t wait until you’re ready to get in the car to teach your cat to wear a collar.
4. Pack cleaned out milk jugs of water so a change in water doesn’t ad-versely affect them. Don’t feed your pet a full meal just before leaving; a small meal a few hours before the trip is better for them.
5. Start training your pet to travel about a month before your trip. Obtain a traveling cage or crate; let them smell it, go in and out of it on their own for while, then start shutting them in it for longer and longer periods of time. A word of advice; only let them out when they are calm and ac-cepting of the cage. If you let them out while they are agitated, you’re only teaching them to misbehave in it. You cannot expect your pet that has never left the comfort of its home to understand that the noisy, smelly box (car) you just stuck them in, is safe.
6. When traveling with pets, call ahead to ensure your destination allows pets, more and more hotels/motels are accommodating pets. Research where you’ll stop every 2 or 3 hours to rest, exercise and water your pet.
7. Traveling with your pet requires some extra forethought, planning and packing, but the reward is a safe, healthy and enjoyable trip for both you and your pet. Have a great time!

Personally, I have always enjoyed traveling outside of my country, but I know many people that have never even left the state they live in and always vacate locally. But, wherever you want to travel to, you can guarantee there will be a travel site that can give you details on every location. Let’s face it, when you can book whatever vacation you like using a website, why bother going to a travel agent. Gone are the days when travel agents were popular and sought after as websites have popped up everywhere and promise all of their customer’s extraordinary savings.
I know it is the norm now but I am not comfortable planning my once a year vacation like this. I’m old-fashioned and still want to sit down with a travel agent, letting them make my plans for me and I always feel like I will get better results than on a website. With a travel agent, I can change my mind about my plans several times, call and ask questions, and have someone to blame should my vacation not turn out to be what I was hoping for. Travel sites on the other hand tend to just be computerized and it is rare that you actually get to speak to a person and then if you do get to speak to a real person, you have no clue where they are.
Even if you are lucky enough to talk to a person, how do you know they are telling you the truth about the situation? It is because of the number of things that can go wrong I still prefer to use my local travel agent even if it does take a little more time and there may be more to pay. One of my friends only ever uses the travel sites to book her vacations but she does like the last minute discounts that can be found which are much easier to find using the internet. Admittedly, she has save a small fortune this way as she will just look at the sites and be patient until the right vacation comes up at the right price.
It would be nice to do this but my career does not allow for impulsive travel arrangements. I don’t doubt for one minute that by using a travel site can be less expensive as you can also get discounts on tours and car hire by booking this way.
Still after all is said and done I still the use the internet a great deal for my vacation research before I actually go along to see my travel agent as I will have most of the information I require before I see her. I take that information and then see a travel agent because at least I know that if my vacation turns out to be a nightmare, I have someone to come back and yell at.
10 Great Reasons to visit Llandudno, North Wales

As North Wales premier tourist resort Llandudno has lots of great attractions from the Victorian Pier to the Great Orme cable car. Journey to the top of Llandudno’s Great Orme on the Great Orme Tramway. The trams take you from the base station located close to the town centre to the summit over 600 feet above. The Great Orme Tramway was built over 100 years ago and splits the journey into two at the Half Way Station. Before journeying to the summit stop off at the Great Orme Copper Mines which are over 4000 years old.
The Great Orme Copper Mines are a short walk from the Half Way station. Alternatively car parking is available if you decide to take in this attraction on a separate trip. The Copper Mines were discovered about 20 years ago and show a fascinating insight into the history of the Great Orme and its earliest inhabitants. They are believed to date from over 4000 years ago and visitors can delve underground through the ancient passages.
The Great Orme Summit Complex consists of a variety of attractions from a bar and restaurant to the Great Orme Visitor centre. The summit is the terminus for both the Great Orme Tramway and the Great Orme Cable Car and on a clear day you can see Snowdonia and Anglesey.
From the summit you can take the Great Orme cable car back down towards the town. The cable car is the longest cable car ride in Britain. As you ride back towards the town you get terrific views of the town so have your camera at the ready. As you start the lower descent you’ll get to see Ski Llandudno another of Llandudno’s great attractions as well as take in some great views of Happy Valley.
For the fit one of Llandudno’s best acitivities is its dry ski slope Ski Llandudno. At over 200 metres the slope is the longest in North Wales and is suitable for both beginners and advanced skiers. Take a ride on the toboggan run as it races through the twists and turns towards the bottom. The toboggan is suitable for mot ages although young children should be accompanied by an adult. Afterwards enjoy a relaxing drink and meal in the Alpine Ski Lodge.
Happy Valley is close to the foot of the Great Orme and offers a large ornamental garden as well as a large play area where the children can burn off a bit of energy. Happy Valley is sheltered on two sides by the Great Orme and offers a peaceful retreat to relax and enjoy the sunshine. Happy Valley also offers some terrific views of Llandudno Pier which is the longest pier in Wales.

Harris Tweed and the Isle of Harris

While Scotland is only a small nation with an historically small population the influence of the Scots upon the world of today is disproportional. Throughout history a disproportionate number of Scottish men and women have played incredibly important roles in the history of the vast majority of countries of the world. From the Founding Fathers to American Presidents, British Prime Ministers to the great many explorers and missionaries the Scottish have help shape modern society. However Scotland is most widely known for it’s tartan, Harris Tweed, bagpipes and the likes.
Though the vast majority consider tartan and Harris Tweed to be fundamentally traditional Scottish nothing could be further from the truth. In actual fact much of what we consider to be traditionally Scottish was a purely Victorian exaggeration (and some say an invention). The famous author Sir Walter Scott and others took elements of the Scottish Highland culture and redesigned it in a more palatable form for the King of England. When Queen Victoria and Albert fell in love with the country more such creations developed to please the Royals and their parties.
It could be said that Sir Walter Scott and Queen Victoria created the Scottish tourism industry. Although there had been earlier visitors to Scotland they were few and far between as the country was remote and communication links were poor. Throughout the Victorian period interest in Scotland grew and, with the advent of railway systems, Scotland became the playground of the upper classes who indulged in hunting, fishing and golf.
While a small number of visitors ventured as far as the Outer Hebrides the majority wore Harris Tweed. Harris Tweed, produced only on the Isle of Harris (and Lewis) is a hard wearing and durable cloth of somber colors which was ideally suited for use in clothing for the Victorian and Edwardian upper class visitors. In 1844 the Earl of Dunmore had asked the weavers of Harris to create a cloth in a similar style to the Murray Tartan. Much encouraged by Lady Dunmore the cloth was made in various styles and quickly became popular.
Harris Tweed is heavily protected, it can only be produced in the Outer Hebrides and the methods used to make it have changed little over the centuries. The cloth is hand made and was used local wool, colored using dyes made from locally occurring plants. The cloth was incredibly tough and it was a long time before other products from abroad encroached into it’s markets however the industry eventually decreased.
In many ways Harris Tweed has remained a popular material with many and the typical Harris Tweed jacket still sells extremely well. In recent years use of the material has diversified greatly and has been used in high fashion on a number of occasions. It is now possible to find a wide selection of product made from it and companies, such as Nike, have recognized it’s qualities and used it in their products.
While depopulation continues to be a problem in the Hebrides much has been done to stimulate industry. Today one of the most important industries is the tourist trade which continues to grow year by year and is now a major element in the local economy. Crofting and the weaving of Harris Tweed continue to have a role but, unfortunately, the tweed industry suffered a major set back with the closure of the main mill. While the future of the industry is uncertain it is likely that there will be an enormous effort to regenerate it.
People visit the Isle of Harris and the Outer Hebrides for a great many reasons. Some visit to trace their family roots, others to indulge in sports, some to enjoy the Gaelic culture, some to study the flora and fauna, or the many archaeological sites but most of all people visit to take in the spectacular countryside. Getting to the Isle of Harris is something of a journey by car with the last leg of the trip being a short ferry crossing. However you can get there quickly via regular flights arriving on the adjoining Isle of Lewis.
