How to Get Started Snowboarding
September 3, 2008
Terje Haakonsen boycotted the Nagano Olympics because he thought the judging was unfair and that the snowboarded who did participate had “sold out” to the establishment. Nagano is responsible for the wave of interest in the new sport. Snowboarding’s addition to the Olympic lineup has helped make a silk purse out of sow’s ear and clean up ‘boarders defiant reputation without harming their edgy flair. If you are interested in how to snowboard take a look.
Know that doing snowboard tricks is a dangerous sport and that for now it is leading the injuries list in outdoor sports. Some say that that statistic is just FALSE. Regardless boarding will abuse the body so make sure that you are capable of taking the gnormous ill-treatment that it sure to heap on your body for a first timer. Get a certified Snowboard instructor. Their abilities can help you save money and save yourself from unnecessary injuries. Look at the sport with an emphasis on safety.
Make a budget for equipment that is heavy on the protective gear. A sexy new snowboard usually gets all the attention for first timers but don’t fall for that. Put your money in quality knee and hip pads, wrist guards, a leash, padding and a substantial helmet. Boards can cost in excess of $400. Use your money protecting yourself from the hazards of the slopes. Also a gnormous supply of ibuprofen. I can’t tell you how much this is helpful. If you can’t figure it out then you are wack and you shouldn’t attempt snowboarding.
Where you live is a consideration for this sport. If you live in the Mohave then it is going to be more difficult for you to get slope time since you will have to travel for snowy parts to take advantage of snowboarding. You could think about sand boarding instead. Any extra travel time will only reduce the amount of time and money you get to spend on doing what you really want to do so seriously evaluate your local weather. This sport, like all others, requires practice and your weather should not be an impediment to getting as much practice as you can.
Decide what you want to learn about. Dedicate yourself to a snowboard method such as freestyle, freeride or freecarve. Each offers its own joy when it comes to snowboarding.
Have a friend take videos of your progress and you can do the same for him/her. Who knows! Maybe you can be the next Youtube star. It is also a fun way to catalogue your personal progress. It can also be a gift for mom on Mother’s Day. Show her what she has been spending all that money on. At first you videos will be very funny since it chronicles more foibles than anything else.
Snowboard camps and snowboard lessons are offered through “Future Snowboarding” and these could be very helpful especially if you are interested in freestyle snowboard. Learning at the same time as other novice students can teach you a lot of what to do as well as what NOT to do. Generally a variety of instructors will be offered and you will benefit from different teaching approaches too. Check out other snowboarding mags too for snowboard lessons in you area.
Well bon voyage! Get started now and have some fun. Snowboarding is just going wild and as a sport is only getting bigger and more extreme!
Five Basic Elements In Building A Hovercraft
August 26, 2008
What is a hovercraft and how do you make one? A hovercraft is a platform vehicle that glides with air cushion. Simply put, instead of wheels, the principles of physics and fluid mechanics are used. Not as simple as it sounds? But really it is simple. In building a hovercraft, you don’t have to worry about the applied science that it adheres into. You just need to know the three basic things.
Simply put, it means that you’ll be using three major elements and put them together to make a hovercraft. These three major elements are:
1. Platform or hoverboard
2. Skirt to cause air cushion
3. Air Vents
When you get all three parts made, it’s time to put them together. But first, it is important to know why these parts are important.
The platform part of the hovercraft is where you’re supposed to sit. This is the vehicle. For the board to fly and glide, its surface area facing the ground should bear enough air cushion to support it. Building a hovercraft requires you to allow that pressurized air to reside underneath that platform. To do that, you should bore strategic holes in it to cause a thick air film to build below.
Because air molecules are more spacious and loose compared to liquid molecules, they disperse faster. To create the cushion of air, it should be controlled below the hoverboard. This means there should be a means to trap the air temporarily to build enough pressure to lift a weight up. This air trap design is called a skirt. This is the most important element in building a hovercraft. It delays the release of air thus creating a lift.
The third part is the air vent. These are simply holes on the platform. This should allow air to pass through. Part of building a hovercraft is the installation of fans. A fan builds a gush of concentrated air. The put that air power to productive use, you need to place them in the best strategic place where the vents are. The vents will lead the air underneath the platform surface thus building cushion.
Other things you may add to your hovercraft are:
- The Propellers - This can be the big fan attached behind a standard commercial hovercraft. Bigger units have more propeller fans.
- Rudder - Like the steering wheel of the craft, this is the thin vertical panel closely placed beside the propeller.
The last two are simply added features which a hovercraft can do without. Especially if you want a hovercraft that seriously gets you places quicker, you need to have huge propeller fans and rudder. The latter allows you to steer the direction of your hovercraft. If you only opt to have a simple ride in your backyard or lawn, don’t fancy it too much. The three elements above should do fine.
As long as your ship lifts up and can carry your weight, then you got the specs right. If you got kids at home, you can take turns in riding the homemade hovercraft and push it to move forward. That should be more fun than the propeller and rudder installed. So when you get all these things in building a hovercraft project done, you should be ready to go.

Entertaining in a Garden Oasis Patio
July 29, 2008
A Mood Enhancing Garden Oasis Patio
After a hard day at work there is nothing more relaxing than sitting outside on a patio swing in a beautifully designed garden oasis patio. Surrounded by ferns and other tropical plants would complete the scene. Natural looking flagstone landscaping underfoot creates the effect of walking down a tropical path.
Designing Gazebo Landscape
If staying out of the sun is a concern a gazebo landscape structure is a great place to serve a meal or just relax. The gazebo could be near the house or set out in the garden as a destination spot in a beautifully designed yard.
A gazebo covering a jacuzzi is also a great way to stay out of the sun while relaxing in the backyard spa. With beautiful climbing plants, hanging flower pots and a few strategically placed candles you will have created the perfect romantic setting.
Natural Flagstone Landscaping
Adding a flagstone landscape allows your guests to meander around your garden oasis patio and out to the gazebo landscape. This invites all who enter your tropical paradise to enjoy every corner. Having different destination areas for entertaining such as the gazebo or patio allows the guests to spread out and not be cramped into one small area.
If you do a lot of entertaining you may want to consider adding an outdoor kitchen or fireplace. This is a great way to visit with your guests while preparing the meal. If the evening becomes cool the outdoor fireplace will warm the garden oasis patio nicely. A gazebo with a fireplace and spa would create the ultimate romantic space.
You do not want to ruin the relaxing atmosphere of your garden oasis patio with the clutter of garden equipment or children’s toys. It would be a good idea to add some attractive storage that blends with the landscape design. There are many ready made products or easy to assemble kits on the market for storage.
Backyard entertaining components can be found at your local home improvement center or after a quick online search. If you want to create a garden oasis patio for a small intimate group or for a large crowd you can easily do it yourself. Some prefab gazebos or storage structures can be ordered online and delivered to your home and you can have them set up in no time. A flagstone landscape design can be laid in a weekend.
White Water Rafting Trips: An Extreme Sport With A Lot To Offer!
July 29, 2008
One of the great things about white water rafting is that whether you are a sportive person or not, it can still appeal to you. If you’re searching for thrill and exhilaration you will find it, but if you just want tranquility on a river surrounded by nature this too can be obtained.
Some things you probably didn’t know about white water rafting
Even though white water rafting is indeed classed as an extreme sport, you don’t of course have to raft down the fiercest of rivers, if you want to contemplate nature around you, you can take on a slow flowing river.
It you enjoy sightseeing nature, rafting down the Grand Canyon won’t let you down, the views one can see from within ones raft from the River are spectacular.
But whether or not you are navigating a fierce or gentle river, if it’s your first time you absolutely must have some first hand training. If you were to just try to start rafting it definitely could be dangerous.
Because of this you must get qualified instructors to show you how to raft safely, once you’ve picked where you want to participate in white water rafting you should do a little research into the different rafting clubs in the area.
If you’re thinking of going on a trip any time soon, you should talk to your travel agent to find out more about the white water rafting training that exists where you’re be going. And don’t forget to make sure that the instructors who will be instructing you have the proper certifications.
A number of things will be explained to you in order for you to participate in white water rafting for the first time. The first thing you’ll be taught will be how to use the safety equipment, your life jacket etc.
You will be shown how to maneuver the raft in teams, since most rafts generally hold from five to seven or more people, and everyone must work as a team to navigate the rapids.
When getting in the raft for the first time you will be shown exactly how you must sit and where you must place your feet, then you will be informed of how you must shift your weight from side to side when navigating rapids and of course your instructors will talk about the things not to do.
Not leaning at any time towards the center of the raft is one thing to remember, if you did you could easily cause a clash of heads. Your guide will also explain what to do if in the unlikely event you happen to fallout of the raft.
As I’m sure it must be pretty obvious by now, it is essential that you know how to swim, so if you do not know how, or aren’t very good at it, you should first take swimming lessons.
If you are planning on going on a white water rafting vacation for the first time, you will definitely have some preparing to do and research, but it will all be worthwhile, since white water rafting is one of the most enjoyable sports that exists.
Is a Steel Building Safe to Use as a Horse Barn?
July 29, 2008
More and more people are using steel buildings for many different reasons. First of all, steel buildings are very versatile because they are used as sport arenas, garages, and even homes. They are quick to build, which is great for companies needing steel buildings because of the rapid changes they undergo. There’s also no more having to wait months on end for a new building to be built for incredibly large amounts of money. Steel buildings are affordable as well.
But what about the people wishing to use a steel building as a horse barn? Is it safe?
Well, let’s put it this way: If a steel building can be made into a home in which people live, then there is no reason why steel buildings cannot be used to house horses. That is rather amazing for a building material that was considered to be unusual just a century ago. Steel wasn’t mass produced until 1855 and it still took time for the versatility and the benefits to be recognized.
The physical and the chemical characteristics of steel make it ideal for building. Simply look at its chemical composition. It has a certain percentage of carbon in it, but is mostly made up of iron. The iron itself will slide past each other if cut into sheets, which makes it very soft. When the carbon is added in, the metal becomes considerably stronger. That’s what gives us steel and gives the steel manufacturers the ability to make various types of steel, which makes such structures as steel barns possible.
You want the main frame of the barn to be very strong, so that is, of course, going to require a harder type of steel. For other parts of the building, the steel doesn’t need to be as hard, so there is more iron and less carbon to make the steel softer and more flexible where it needs to be.
As for horse barns, horse owners are using steel buildings because they are low maintenance and bug infestation is not an issue. That means no carpenter bees and no termites eating away at wood. Steel also cannot develop mold, mildew, or any other type of fungi that may decide it likes to grow in a horse barn. It can certainly try, but nothing is going to happen if the barn is made of steel. A steel horse barn means more attention is paid to the animals and less attention is paid to the upkeep of the barn. Other things to take into consideration when using a steel barn is that there is a low risk of it becoming infested with parasites that can make the horses ill. We’ve also seen the horror stories where hay or straw has caught fire and the horses have no way of getting out of the barn because the entire structure is ablaze. The good news is that the risk of such a fire is reduced significantly since steel is not combustible. Even if fire would break out, there is a good chance the roof and the walls would not collapse since steel can endure incredibly high temperatures.
This makes the only concern being what size of steel building is needed. Of course that is going to depend on how many horses you have or how many you hope to have if you’re just starting out. But what is great is that steel buildings are safe to use as horse barns and in many ways keeps your horses safer than if they were in a barn made of wood or another type of building material.
Full Face Helmet - Cars Or Motorcycles
July 17, 2008
If you want to be safe don’t buy motorcycles. But if you want to save money over what cars cost then a cycle is not a bad choice. Reckless car drivers do not watch for cycles, which can cause accidents. All riders and drivers need to be cautious when on the road. One great tip for motorcyclist is to wear their helmet and turn their lights one when traveling.
All riders should be concerned about being safe. Often times this is attained through donning boots, leathers, gloves, and of course a helmet preferably a full-face model. A jacket and pants is what the term leathers refer to because these are usually made from leather, which protects one from skin scraps. The rider can happen to have a fall with the bike that all of this gear will protect and safeguard the rider from. Full-face helmets are not required but they are strongly recommended as the helmet to purchase due to the extent of the coverage and protection they offer.
Automobiles and bikes can both have an appealing appearance Automobiles are sometimes built so tank like that they loose their appeal visually. The sports models though of cars are even alluring at times. It is all about what kind, color, and model you buy. It goes the same where cycles are concerned except for the fact that the rider is totally exposed on a cycle.
The full body of the rider is totally seen when on motorcycles. With everyone decked out in helmets and special clothing male and female alike notice not only the rider but the cycle too. The lady riders do tend to get a bit more attention when riding. I wonder why? The ladies are also respected for learning how to operate a cycle efficiently.
The way cars use gas should be a crime sometimes. Certain models just plain use too much gas. Better mileage is happening more these days but still not what it should be. And with gas prices at all times high prices this has become a major problems for some people.
The story on gas usage is completely different for cycles. They are so economical with gas consumption that it is worth looking into getting one. They do have smaller gas tanks than most cars so sometimes the motorcyclist may feel like they are using more gas than what they really do. Even when you add the gear you have to wear it still is not heavy enough to make the cycle work harder as far as burning too much gas.
Maybe the largest thing that makes cycles and cars not alike is how much the cost is in getting one. Cars come to us with very price tags especially for new ones. There is no dodging that cars are an especially costly when you consider buying even a cheap used car you usually have to fix it more after you get it. Did you know that for the price of replacing an air conditioner in a care you could purchase a cycle? All the kinds of maintenance you have to deal with a car on is costly too. Emissions tests to get license, brakes, transmission repairs, and alignment and those are just some of the things it takes to maintain cars. The loss of 1/3 of the value of the car happens just leaving the lot the first day. You cannot only buy a cycle but all the leather protective gear you want plus more for less than the money you give for a car.
A cycle is just plain cheaper than a car even with the expense of all the gear and add ons. For about $300 you can get a cycle that has been ridden before. Put that cost together with the fantastically good gas mileage and your wallet will be so grateful.
Full Face Helmet - Motorcycles Are Cheaper On Gas
July 16, 2008
As vehicles go motorcycles are known to be the least safe of them all. You ask is any vehicle guaranteed? No is the correct answer. The car drivers often do not pay attention to the fact that motorcyclists are on the road. This creates a bit of danger so both drivers that of care and on motorcycles should be aware of each one of them. One other thing that will bring some attention to the bike rider is having their lights on. They should also have a full-face helmet on too to be safe.
To be safe there are a few things you will need to get. Start with some kind of helmet the one that is the most protective is the full-face helmet. Then there are the items that are often called leathers which is simply put the jacket and pants made of leather but also these days it could be Kevlar used. You will also need some gloves and some boots. All of these things together keep either your head protected somewhat from road burns or worse.
Yes the motorcycles do show all a riders head and body when they ride they are fully exposed to the elements. Many people will be able to admire rider while they ride all decked out in their fancy duds. Guess who gets the most attention while riding though? Of course women do!
The way cars use gas should be a crime sometimes. Certain models just plain use too much gas. Better mileage is happening more these days but still not what it should be. And with gas prices at all times high prices this has become a major problems for some people.
But with cycles it is something different. You may have to stop and get gas more often but only due to smaller gas tanks that only hold about 12 gallons. Because the bikes are not as hefty weight as most cars are this causes them not to burn as much gas trying to move them on the road. The extra weight of the rider on the bike really makes very little difference as to how the cycle performs gas wise. The mileage that is attained with a tank of gas is much more satisfactory on a cycle compared to a car.
Prices are so very opposite from each other between cars and cycles. The cars are always more money than the cycles. All the things you have to do to make sure a car runs right cost a lot of money too. Brake jobs, twice the tires, alignments and more need to be done and it adds up money wise. Even if you buy a used old rattletrap for a few hundred dollars you would still have to put a lot of money into making it drivable. The depreciation of a car starts with it losing 1/3 of its value just driving off the car lot. You can not only get all your accessories and you bike for less than a car you can probably get an extra set of gear and it still be cheaper.
A cycle is just plain cheaper than a car even with the expense of all the gear and add ons. For about $300 you can get a cycle that has been ridden before. Put that cost together with the fantastically good gas mileage and your wallet will be so grateful.
Freshwater Fishing Reels
July 15, 2008
Bass fishing is quickly becoming one of America’s most popular pastimes. Even for families, bass fishing is sometimes replacing more traditional activities such as visiting the zoo or the park. Some estimates from the fishing industry suggest that bass fishing is nearly 70% more popular than other types of fresh water fishing. How did bass fishing get to become the favorite freshwater sport for millions of Americans? Just ask a bass fisher.
Bass fishing is a freshwater sport that naturally appeals to a lot of outdoorsmen. It’s a relaxing way to spend the day outside, enjoying the scenery. And once you snag a fish, the activity becomes very rewarding. Some bass fishing enthusiasts decide to go pro and compete at the pro level. Bass fishing tournaments are the place to put your angling and fishing skills to the test, against the best of the best.
Casting a fishing rod is not a science, and each person does it differently. How a rod is cast determines how that fishing rod will behave. In some ways, the action of the rod will be very similar from one person to the next. But in other ways, the behavior of the fishing rod will be dramatically different depending on the person casting it. Everyone’s different, and has different arms, hands, muscles and even nervous systems that affect how a fishing rod gets cast.
As noted earlier, however, some rods will act the same way for each caster. When the action is different, it is because of how the person cast it. For example, you can cast a rod with stiff action or medium action, depending on who cast it. Neither one is wrong. The rod’s action and behavior just depends on the fisherman casting it.
The action of most rods will react substantially the same for all casters, however. When a rod does not react the same for one caster as another, the action of the rod for each caster is different. That is, a rod may be called a stiff action by one caster and a medium stiff action by another, and both are correct. The action of a rod, then, depends directly on the particular caster using it and may vary from caster to caster.
Most fishermen will tell you that the worst feeling is when your fishing line snaps just when you hook a fish. Luckily, with the introduction of monofilament fishing lines, that unfortunate snap is a thing of the past. Available in different colors, sizes, strength and thickness, monofilament fishing lines are much stronger than traditional fishing lines. Better yet, they also cost less!
Monofilament fishing lines feature a unique coating designed to reduce snapping. They’re bulky and strong, which gives fisherman a distinct advantage. In addition, they are easy to knot and appear transparent in the water. The only drawback to monofilament fishing lines is that the material they’re made out of does not stretch as well as other fishing lines.
Another great advancement in the world of fishing is a device that can locate a school of fish nearby. Just picture yourself out on the lake, trying to catch some fish, and you turn on the toy you got online. Wait for a few beeps and then the device tells you that just 500 yards from your current location is a big school of fish. This device is like a high-tech scanning machine that surveys the entire body of water to find a school of fish, just waiting to be caught!
You’ll Have Great Memories after a Fly Fishing Vacation
July 15, 2008
Fly fishing is a very old pursuit that has fed and entertained millions of people while it also provides the chance for a much-needed vacation. In today’s busy world, working people have many restrictions and pressures on their time; and, without some much-needed rest and relaxation, even the strongest are capable of getting exhausted.
Nothing provides as restful a vacation as fly fishing. There are no alarm clocks, ringing phones, screaming kids or ungrateful bosses. There is only the water, wildlife, fish and you.
Here is a chance to stand in water while you marvel at the wildlife around you. The rustle of the wind in lush trees and sweet smells of the wild flowers can be intoxicating. That sounds so inviting, doesn’t it? Are you ready to leave right now?
Anglers or novices can take a fly-fishing vacation in just about any geographical location of the world. Fly fishing can be the fishing method of choice in rivers, lakes, streams, ponds and even the oceans. Most fly fishermen fish for trout, catfish, carp, salmon and much bigger fish in the sea.
The fish are fooled by attempting to eat an artificial fly or some other insect on the water’s surface. Even though fly fishing requires some practice, it can yield a very special outdoor vacation along with lots of delicious food.
Using a guide is especially recommended if you are on a tight time schedule. One can point you in the right direction from the beginning. If you need help, there are many fly-fishing guides who would be glad to give you some instruction. They know all the best places, water conditions and particulars of the sport.
There are many fishing spots that offer vacation packages for families wishing to enjoy the outdoors. The options may include homes or cabins, boats, fishing equipment and a host of other things for a fly-fishing vacation. A great thing about a fly-fishing vacation is that it is in the outdoors where there are no food vendors, toy vendors or other distractions vying for all your money. Your children can enjoy activities such as swimming, hiking, exploring, and fishing that are free. The fact that such a vacation is reasonably priced, fun and relaxing can make it very enticing.
Many outfitters can be found at lakes, rivers or oceans that are in business to rent fly-fishing equipment. Therefore, you can try it all without the unnecessary expense of buying it. Not everyone will have a need for high end fly-fishing equipment, and renting some can be a great way to see what works for you. Even life vests and boats can usually be rented. There is nothing quite like being immersed in nature’s bounty while providing the food for your family that you caught and prepared. As a result, your kids will always remember the trip; and, that is a promise.
