Exercises And Nutrition For Weight Loss Part 4

September 26, 2008

Part-4 When you decide to start working out, start slowly and do not get discouraged if you do not achieve your fitness goals immediately. A lot of people make this mistake. They feel that if they push their bodies harder they can lose more weight in a couple of work outs. If you push your body too much in the first few goes, you end up with sprained joints, a sore or bad back and even torn ligaments. The golden rule is slow and steady wins the race.

Aerobics are useful if you are willing to lose the extra unwanted pounds from your body muscles. It is a kind of rhythmic exercise that empowers you to move your body following the rhythm of the background music. It helps improve your muscular activities and physical or physiological capacities.

Aerobic exercise can be cardiovascular exercise that is maintained for a long time. This could be 25- 30 minutes of walking, running, in-line skating, even time on the rowing machine. Aerobic exercise relates to physical workouts that require oxygen delivered to the muscles (via the lungs and blood supply) over an extended period . Aerobic training is often called “cardio” exercise because it strengthens the cardiovascular (heart) and respiratory (lungs) systems

Swimming is very popular with people who are extremely overweight, pregnant, or suffering from some kind of injury. Swimming is considered as one of the best exercises to lose weight and also to build and tone muscles. When you swim, all your major muscles are called into action.

Walking helps cultivate relationships, makes one forget worries, and relaxe the mind. It aids digestion .Walking is always a good one to start with. We use many muscles while walking, walking stimulates the brain, and helps the blood flow evenly throughout the body.

Walking at a moderate pace yields longer workouts with less soreness - leading to more miles and more fat worked off on a regular basis. High intensity walks (extreme degree of strength, force or energy) on alternate days help condition one’s system

Another good weight loss exercise is stationary cycling, it functions in a similar way as walking, while effecting the body metabolism rate and fat burning at a faster rate.

If you have this equipment stored in your living room you can enjoy it while watching movie or listening to music. You can do it in your free time, while burning some extra calories from your body.

Holidays and Weight Loss, Eat and Lose Body Fat

September 3, 2008

by Ricardo d Argence

When you’re on a weight loss program, it is very tempting to eat foods that prove to be harmful to your body. However, it is the very last thing you’d want to do!

It’s just one cookie, it won’t do any damage…right? Well, did you realize that one little cookie a day for a month can add an extra pound to your weight? During holiday season it can be especially difficult to resist the lure of delicious food and stick to a diet. Here are some handy hints as to how you can manage to maintain your weight loss during these periods.

It is important to never skip meals. Being tired and hungry most of the time will leave you feeling pretty grumpy. If you think skipping a few meals can make up for your intentions to splurge on those tasty holiday meals, you are dead wrong! It will most likely cause you to be extrememly hungry during the holiday season, causing you to over eat.

Before going to the party get something to eat. It is a good idea to snack before the party, and select a high fiber meal. A high fiber diet will fill you up and make it less likely that you will binge on holiday treats.

Stay as far Away as Possible from the Buffet Table. Resisting those tasty looking dishes can be a real challenge and you don’t want to stimulate your senses in a negative way that may cause your willpower to be threatened unnecessarily. Choose a healthy helping of those foods you need-the salads the fruits and a snack or two and move away from the table as fast as you can. Get involved in a good engaging conversation, and soon you’ll get your mind off food to be able to survive through those threatening times (to you weight loss program) and sail through the party with flying colors.

Drink lots of water. Water is a great lubricant and helps you keep dehydration away during the weight loss program. Drink plenty of them during the party to avoid feelings of hunger-they do a good job of filling your tummy instead of binging on the food. Water will also help to fire up your metabolic rate and helps flush fats away.

A Good Amount of Exercise. Exercise is very crucial to keeping your metabolism raised up and the adrenalin going so you don’t have to turn to food to feel good. Don’t let the holiday season hold you back from exercising. This is the worst excuse to have for not exercising.

What Is The Cause Of Eczema?

August 26, 2008

by The Alternate Medic

In many cases eczema is a debilitating condition which is hard to live with as there is no known cure for it at present. However there are ways to minimise the effects the condition can have on your daily life.

Obviously one of the best ways to cope with the condition is to try and find out what the cause of eczema is. Unfortunately, there doesn?t appear to be a single root cause for all cases of eczema (at least none that has yet been found), but there are certain factors which seem to aggravate the condition.

Trying To Find The Cause Of Eczema

It is well known that many eczema sufferers are also prone to suffering from allergies (hay fever is an excellent example of this) therefore some doctors believe it is a good idea to take an allergy test.

Unfortunately, an allergy test won?t magically reveal the cause of eczema, however, it will reveal what kind of allergens produce an adverse reaction in your body ? a reaction that could cause your eczema to flare up.

Dust in the house is a common allergen, so eczema sufferers who test positive for this should consider buying hypoallergenic bedding to minimise the amount of dust mites and other irritants that may be the cause of eczema flare ups.

Therefore, the results of an allergy test can point to irritants you can try to exclude (or at the very least minimise) in your everyday life. By doing this, you may find that the cause of eczema in your own life can be isolated and the effects reduced.

Stress is another common cause of eczema which occurs in everyone?s life at some point or another. Stress can be a big trigger however, not many people realise it can have such a big effect on an eczema sufferer.

If you tend to get stressed easily and you find it affects your eczema adversely, try to find ways to de-stress on a daily basis. Make some time for yourself each day to simply relax and enjoy something, whether it’s reading a good book or reclining in the bath.

Naturally, reducing your stress levels won?t happen overnight, but if you recognize it as being the trigger for your eczema flare-up, persevering towards a more relaxed lifestyle will yield big benefits in the long run.

The old adage “every cause has an effect” rings true, therefore finding the cause of eczema in your life even though it may appear to be unrelated at first, could lead you to the solution to your problem. Take this source away, and your eczema should improve.

How are you Handling the Poison in Your Drinking Water?

July 29, 2008

by Samuel S. Peters

Consider this quote: “U.S. drinking water contains more than 2,100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer.” So said Ralph Nader of the Ralph Nader Research Group. By the way, water utilities test for only about 75 of these. This article will focus on just one of these toxins found in most public water, chlorine.

So you buy an aquarium and some fish and you want to fill it with city faucet water. What is the first requirement? Yes, it is to de-chlorinate the water with tablets or by allowing the water to sit several days. If fish will die in chlorinated water, how can it be good for people? Yet, it is common in many cities for the maximum level of chlorine allowed in the public water system to be greater than what is recommended in swimming pools!

Let’s not give chlorine a bad rap. It is an excellent disinfectant, ridding water of bacteria such as dysentery, typhoid, and cholera. The problem is that chlorine damages the human body by producing THMs (trihalomethanes). These are cancer causing and damage cells. Chlorine also can score the internal walls of arteries, making it easier for cholesterol to attach itself. Mississippi River drinking water has been shown to contain 63 cancer causing substances made by chlorine’s reaction to pollutants in the water such as methanol and carbon disulphide. An increase in the cases of bladder, urinary tract, and kidney cancers have been reported following the infusion of extra chlorine to treat a city water system contamination.

Yet chlorine does not enter the body only through drinking. In fact, a greater risk of chlorine poisoning occurs in the shower. The hot water opens the pores and the chlorine, which evaporates at a lower temperature than water, enters through the lungs. This results in the formation of chloroform, which will cause bronchitis, and asthma, and will increase the risk of cancer. The warm chlorine water may also cause skin irritations such as eczema.

This is all shocking news to parents! After all, children’s bodies are much more susceptible to chemical changes as described above. What conscientious parents want to poison their child?

So how can people be sure of giving themselves and their family safe water? A popular option is to purchase bottled water. The problem with this is that, unless you know the source, it could be an unwarranted trust. The fact is, there are no federal regulations concerning bottled water. A company may promise fresh spring water on the label, but pour tap water inside. Yes, to do so is not breaking the law, and it is being done today. So, obviously, pouring money into bottled water is not the answer.

To be sure your water is safe, it is best to filter it yourself. This can be done at a minimum of cost. Start with something to filter your drinking and cooking water. Be sure the company promises their product will remove chlorine. Such promises are regulated by federal laws. Don’t think of it as an expense, but an investment in the peace of mind that you are giving your family good, healthy water.

If You Want To Develop A Wide, Muscular Back…

July 29, 2008

by Ricardo Daryans

It never ceases to amaze me how incredibly misguided the vast majority of the population is in the gym. Everyone is desperate for that wide, powerful and muscular physique, yet very few understand how to properly channel their efforts to get there.

A lot of guys in the gym neglect a really important group of muscles, Back. They maybe do that because it’s a muscle you will hardly see it in the mirror or maybe because it’s a more stressful training. Maybe just because the most of them don’t even know how important is to have a wide, muscular back.

70% of your upper body muscle mass resides in the back area! Nothing can replace the upper body thickening effect of big, bulging lats and a set of wide, tall trapezius muscles. That’s how important your back is. I am, of course, talking about the major muscles of the back: the lats, traps, spinal erectors, rhomboids and lower back.

There are 4 major movements that you must perform to properly develop your back. And here they are:

1) Deadlifts. There is not a single exercise out there that can even come close to matching the effectiveness of a basic, bent-legged barbell deadlift. This should be the most important part of your routine.

2) Vertical pulling movement. To get the most bang for your buck I recommend a basic overhand chin-up. This is the bread and butter of vertical pulling movements and will stimulate growth in the lats like no other exercise. Examples: v-bar pulldowns, chin-ups, lat pulldowns, etc.

3) A horizontal pulling movement. Otherwise referred to as “rows”, horizontal pulling movements place their emphasis on the upper/middle portion of the back and also stimulate the lats.

4) A shrugging movement. While not quite as important as the above mentioned lifts, a shrugging movement should still be performed at the end of the workout to target the upper traps and develop that mountainous, diamond-shaped look from behind. A basic barbell or dumbbell shrug will do the trick.

Okay, let’s put it all together Deadlifts - 2 sets of 5 to 7 reps. Overhand Chin-Ups - 2 sets of 5 to 7 reps. Bent Over Barbell Rows - 2 sets of 5 to 7 reps. Barbell Shrugs - 2 Sets of 10 to 12 reps.

Perform this workout once per week with full effort and I guarantee that your upper body will appear thicker, wider and more muscular than ever before. What about specific routines for the chest? What about the biceps, triceps and shoulders? How about the thighs, calves and abs? Don’t worry, i will write about them in future articles.

What’s Missing From Your Label?

July 29, 2008

by Cecelia Rank

It’s crucial that your body gets the nutrients it needs to function effectively and efficiently. In fact, it’s so important, our bodies tell us so by giving us symptoms. Feeling tired, sluggish, queasy, sad, and restless are all symptoms, which can be attributed to an imbalance of nutrients our bodies need to stay healthy and vibrant.

Processed foods, pollution and good old daily stress drain our body of nutrients and it’s up to us to replace them. Although eating a well balanced diet is always best, most of us don’t seem to have the time.

Face it, we’re a busy “on the go” type crowd, The average person works at least 8 hours a day and doesn’t normally have the time to eat the proper amount of nutrients (although it’s much better if we got our nutrition this way). In addition, and because we always seem rushed, it’s difficult know exactly how much of the nutrients needed, you’re actually getting from the food you eat. For this reason, taking a multivitamin supplement is so very important for maintaining proper balance and good health and they’re convenient to taking a hand full of supplements.

But, with all the research and billions of dollars being used today on the latest and greatest ingredients in the world, why is it most of them are missing from our multivitamin labels? Maybe the answer is, because it’s cheaper and easier to keep on producing the same old pill. But your body pays the price in the end! Because these overlooked breakthroughs can make a huge difference in how you feel. Not only this minute, but also down the road.

Make sure you’re getting the roper nutrition in the right amounts for a healthy body. Don’t short change yourself. Your multivitamin should have:

Brain Nutrients for memory and the alleviation of mental fog. As we age, free radicals attack the fatty tissues in our brain. But this can be helped as long as the brain is supplied with proper supplementation. This can keep you thinking sharp as a tack and feeling more alert than ever.

Powerful Brain Stimulants to eliminate that feeling of being in a fog. When we get older, disease attacks the fatty tissues of the brain. As long as we give our brains proper nutrition, we can stay mentally alert and sharp as if we were in our twenties again.

B Vitamins and Pantothenic acid can help to eliminate years of stress. Proper amounts of B vitamins have been known to make you feel calmer and less stressed.

Phytonutrients found in luscious whole food sources are necessary for aging healthfully. However almost 50% of us don’t eat even two servings a day of fruit and vegetables. Isn’t it strange that Phytonutrients are not in most multivitamins?

Resveratrol for normal heart function. Resveratrol has been shown in studies as an effective antioxidant that penetrates all parts of your cells to squelch free radicals and support the cardiovascular system. It supports your brain function, too, by alleviating oxidative stress.

Of all the Vitamins we need, Vitamin C is the one thing our body needs an abundance of, yet the multivitamins we buy in the drug stores simply don’t have adequate amount of this wonderful ingredient. Not having enough vitamin c can make the difference in you living out your own dreams or wishing you did.

Multivitamins are also said to be more efficient in liquid form, as the body may absorb liquid multivitamin supplements five times more efficiently than multivitamins in pill form.

Don’t wait until you get ill to begin taking multivitamins. Your body is the only one you’ll ever have and if you don’t take care of it, who will?

The Truth Behind Alternative Health Therapy

July 29, 2008

by Anne Woodland

Alternative health therapy is often used instead of conventional treatment. Integrated therapies use a combination of either alternative or complementary therapies with normal medical treatment, for the practice of which a high level of expertise is required. Alternative therapies make available services which are not offered in conventional medicine. Some of the alternative therapies include: herbal medicine, folk medicine, and homeopathy, diet fads, new age healing, faith healing, naturopathy, chiropractic, and music therapy even though this isn’t an exhaustive list. Alternative therapies very often promise cure or help in areas where conventional treatment might not wish to do so.

You can gain a sense of control over your health through alternative health therapies that improves general quality of life by making you feel better about yourself. Reducing and eliminating tension, stress, anxiety, depression and sleeplessness, causes the person to feel a sense of well-being and relaxation. Alternative health therapies can help you to reduce all of the symptoms that are associated with cancer, like feeling sick, pain, constipation, breathlessness, tiredness, diarrhea, and poor appetite along with moderating all of the side effects that are associated with the traditional treatment for cancer.

They alleviate pain which could conceal a grave situation and this is a possibility as today they are frequently used with traditional medicine. For example, there are some support groups for cancer, that offer all of these therapies for free or for a small fee and there are some hospices and hospitals that provide these as a special part of the care for cancer, right alongside of the conventional treatments for cancer like radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Several of the people that now have cancer are known to use all of these therapies in order to help support them throughout the stages of cancer and the treatment itself. These therapies are very valuable in that they identify and support spiritual and emotional characteristics and physical features, but they should not be used as the only alternative line of treatment.

More than billion is spent by the Americans annually on vitamins and herbs which are alternative health products. The recent studies that were conducted by Phillips, Tindle, Eisenberg and Davis, reflected that there was roughly seventy two million adults within the United States that use alternative and complementary therapies. The studies conducted by Herman, Craig and Caspi in 2005 also show an out of pocket spend of about billion annually on these therapies.

However there is no specific alternative health therapy that is more effective than the other, you will only be able to determine which treatment would suit you and which one is effective only by the trial and error method. Individual therapies like massage, meditation, acupuncture, homeopathy, aromatherapy, hypnotherapy, reflexology and reiki are proved to be very helpful for some people in improving their life. Before you consider any of the alternative therapies that are available, it is always a very good idea to consult with your physician, it is also important that you double check that any treatment that you take in addition isn’t going to adversely affect any of the current treatment programs that you are on.

In case you are thinking of using any alternative health therapy along with your contemporary medication then you must talk to you doctor and find about the pros and cons that are related. Do not neglect any important aspects that need to be discussed. Before considering and deciding on this option, you should first check with your doctor on whether or not the treatment is available at your hospital or clinic. Many doctors are getting convinced that complementary medicine still has its own place in the society. They would also be able to recommend specific therapies and treatments which would suit. For many today, alternative therapies are helping them cope and manage the effects of conventional treatment by the reduction in the feeling of anxiety and feeling the return of a certain control of their own lives.

You Need More Than Calcium To Overcome Osteoporosis

July 29, 2008

by Michael Sellar

Fractures caused by brittle and thinning bones affects one in twelve men and one in three women.

Bone mass peaks at around age 35. From then it’s downhill all the way, especially for women whose bone mass is 10% - 15% less than men’s at skeletal maturity and then suffer with accelerated bone loss for 8 - 10 years around the menopause when hormone levels decline. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is not the answer. It increases the risk of blood clotting, stroke, heart attack and cancer.

The Problem With Calcium

Calcium is of course important. However osteoporosis is not a deficiency disease caused by a lack of calcium. It is not recommended to take calcium supplements on their own. There is no certainty that the calcium will end up in the bones. It could find its way into tissues instead. This may create its own health problems. Vitamin D certainly improves the absorption of calcium, but calcium has important synergistic relationships with a range of other minerals.

Magnesium Is Also Important

Two-thirds of the magnesium in the body is found in the bones. It plays a vital role in the metabolism of calcium and bone. A deficiency of magnesium decreases the strength of bone, its volume and its development. It is positively associated with bone mineral density (BMD) as has been demonstrated in a number of population studies.

Strontium Can Stimulate Bone Formation

A century ago studies demonstrated strontium to be able to effectively stimulate rapid bone formation and that the combination of strontium with calcium was superior to using calcium alone to mineralise bones.

Boron Helps Bones To Heal

Boron is an important mineral for calcium retention. Dr Rex Newnham, a world authority on boron has stated that broken bones will heal in half the usual time with adequate supplies of this mineral.

Manganese Is Needed For The Growth Of Bone

Manganese is required to mineralise the bone. Blood manganese levels in osteoporotic women were found to be only 25% of those without osteoporosis. Deficiencies lead to abnormal bone and cartilage growth and degeneration of vertebral discs.

You Need Silicon, Zinc & Copper

Silicon is a rigid substance and the body uses it at the calcification sites of bones. Zinc is required for bone to form normally. Copper works in association with zinc. A lack of this mineral can lead to defects in the bone and calcium loss. Iron may also have a role to play in bone formation.

Let’s Not Forget Those Important Vitamins

Vitamin D facilitates active calcium absorption in the intestines. It is also involved in bone turnover. Vitamin D status declines with age so deficiency in the aged is not uncommon.

Vitamin K is vital for bone formation, remodelling and repair. A few population studies show that deficiencies of vitamin K in either the diet or circulating in the body is associated with reduced BMD or an increase in the rate of fracture.

Bone health can certainly be added to the long list of conditions that vitamin C can treat. It is required for the collageneous structure of the bone. Vitamin C may also protect the skeleton from oxidative stress especially for cigarette smokers. Smoking greatly increases the risk of hip fracture.

Vitamin A has an important role to play in bone remodelling. Deficiencies of this vitamin have detrimental affects on bone health.

A toxic byproduct of protein metabolism is called homocysteine. Studies suggest that the body is less able to convert it to less toxic compounds at the menopause. This means the body requires more folic acid to complete the task. Other vitamins which help lower homocysteine are vitamins B6 and B12.

And Finally

To conclude, bone health depends on more than just calcium. It requires a whole range of vitamins and minerals. This approach to ostoporosis is likely to be far more successful than current orthodox methods.

Is Your Vitamin Supplement Letting You Down?

July 29, 2008

by Michael Sellar

One of the key principles of nutrition is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Food provided by nature contains a wide spectrum of different nutritional factors.

Nutritional supplements usually only contain a very small percentage of all the nutritional factors found in foods. Taking a supplement of this kind is not synergy and it’s not a food supplement. This is drug nutrition.

A large proportion of drugs are derived from plants. The most potent extract of the plant is removed and made into a pharmaceutical preparation. The herbalist uses the whole of the plant.

As with the herbal example, to create a nutritional supplement, the pharmacist will extract the most active part of the nutrient complex and discard the rest. This can no longer be regarded as a dietary supplement. Instead it is a weak drug.

Ascorbic Acid Is Not Vitamin C

Does the vitamin label on your supplement state that vitamin C is provided as ascorbic acid only? This isn’t vitamin C. This is only a fraction, albeit the most potent fraction, of the vitamin C complex. To get the latter requires the flavonols, flavones and flavonones that are found in bioflavonoids and fruit extracts.

Vitamin E Is Not Only Alpha Tocopherol

If the supplement label states that vitamin E is only provided as alpha tocopherol then the supplement does not contain vitamin E. It contains a fraction of a nutrient. Vitamin E is made up of at least eight elements. Taking just a single element has potentially harmful effects on the body, which requires the whole complex for good health.

Beta Carotene & Vitamin A

Many supplements provide pro vitamin A in the form of beta carotene. While this does convert into vitamin A, it is only one fraction of the carotenoid complex which comprises 600 or more other pigments.

One of the great early pioneers of nutritional healing was Royal Lee. In 1940 he pointed out that synthetic, chemically purified vitamins are not vitamins in the true meaning of the word. They are simply fragments of vitamins. Whole foods provided by nature contain these vitamin complexes. Supplements need to be derived from whole foods.

So now look at your supplement label with fresh eyes. Are you taking a concentrated food into your body or are you gulping down a drug?
