An Entertaining Space Age Adaptation of a Classic

Treasure Planet is a science fiction animated feature produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Released in 2002, Treasure Planet marked the 42nd animated feature in the Disney canon. It is a science fiction version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s popular novel Treasure Island. It employed the innovative technique of featuring two-dimensional animation over three-dimensional backgrounds. Indeed, this technique was used effectively on the character of John Silver, where his cybernetic arm was computer generated and the remainder of his body hand-drawn.
The plot is loosely based on Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Jim Hawkins, voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, witnesses a ship crashing near the inn, where he works. The ship’s dying pilot gives him a sphere and warns, “beware the cyborg.” Shortly thereafter, a gang of pirates raids the inn. Jim, his mother, and friend, Dr. Delbert Doppler, voiced by David Hyde Pierce, barely escape. Jim learns the sphere is a holographic map that leads to the legendary “Treasure Planet.” Jim and Doppler commission a ship to find this planet. Among the ship’s crew is John Silver, voiced by Brian Murray, whom Jim suspects to be the cyborg. As the ship moves towards Treasure Planet, a mutiny erupts, led by Silver. The planet turns out to be a space station, wherein Jim, Silver and an unscrupulous pirate named Scroop seek out the treasure.
Treasure Planet was in production for over four and a half years, the original idea having been pitched by Ron Clements in 1985. Curiously, it was during this same pitch meeting that John Musker pitched the story for the terrifically successful The Little Mermaid. Roughly 350 crew members began principal production in 2000. The animators were inspired by the painterly illustrators associated with the Brandywine School of Illustration (including Howard Pyle and N.C. Wyeth). The animators utilized the animation technique known as Deep Canvas. Deep Canvas allowed the animators to place the camera’s eye anywhere the action or scene demanded, much like a live-action film. Furthermore, the film was made with an adherence to Ron Clements’s 70/30 Law, wherein 70% of the animation would be of the traditional, hand-drawn variety, and 30% would be computer generated.
The prologue of the film originally featured an adult Jim Hawkins narrating the story, but this idea was scrapped as it was deemed too brooding and prevented character involvement. Additionally, a key sequence featuring Jim working on his solar surfer was to be included in the film, but the length of the opening surfing sequence required the scene be cut.
Regrettably, Treasure Planet was a box office disappointment. Indeed, many called it a box office bomb, grossing only $38 million in light of its $140 million budget. Disney’s Buena Vista Distribution was forced to immediately adjust its fourth quarter earnings statement by $47 million. Despite the unfortunate performance, Treasure Planet was favorably received by the critics, indeed according to respected critic, Stephen Hunter, the film “boasts the purest of Disney raptures: It unites the generations, rather than driving them apart.

Welcome to a world where animals rule and the only human around isn’t human anymore. Welcome to the world of Brother Bear. Marking the 43rd film in Disney’s line of animated features, the film, originally entitled Bears, marked a short-lived return to traditionally hand-drawn animation. It was the third feature completed at the Disney-MGM Studios in Orlando, Florida, and subsequently the last. The studio shut down the Orlando facility in an effort to produce computer animated features.
Released in 2003, Brother Bear is the story of Kenai, an Inuit boy who tracks down and kills the bear that killed his older brother. The slaughter angers the Great Spirits, who transform him into a bear as punishment. Kenai’s living brother, Denahi, thinking he was killed by the newly transformed bear, hunts him down for revenge. As brother mistakenly hunts brother, Kenai’s only hope is to befriend his own worst enemy, a grizzly cub named Koda. Only Koda can show him the way to reverse the transformation.
It should be noted that the comedy supplied by the moose characters of Tuke and Rutt is compliments of Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas. The duo essentially reprised their roles of Bob and Doug McKenzie of SCTV fame. The skit, and subsequently the relationship between Tuke and Rutt, involves two dimwitted brothers who can never agree on anything, but manage to reconcile because of their lack of short-term memory. It’s their relationship that inspires Koda to reconcile with Kenai after their falling out.
Critical reception was mixed, with some reviewers dismissing the film as a thematic retreading of territories covered by movies like The Fox and the Hound, The Lion King, and even Ice Age. On the other hand, critics like Roger Ebert gave the film a thumbs up, noting its moving story and convincing characterizations. Other critics especially liked the surreptitious change of the film’s aspect ratio. The film, while Kenai is a human, is projected in standard 1.75:1 ratio. When Kenai is transformed into a bear, the aspect ratio changes to an anamorphic 2.35:1. Likewise, the art direction changes in color and in tone, from realistic and dark to colorful and otherworldly.
The film was a box office triumph, earning $85,000,000 domestically and $165,000,000 worldwide. The DVD release, distributed in 2004, raked in an additional $167 million. This makes Brother Bear one of Disney’s most successful films to date. This success prompted a direct-to-video sequel, Brother Bear 2, that was released in 2006. When all is said and done, the majority opinion is that Brother Bear is a truly moving tale, as the tagline describes, of a boy who became a man by becoming a bear.
