To an antique devotee, nothing beats the satisfaction of creating a whole set of arbitrarily acquired antique furniture. But if you just love antique but aren’t exactly an expert, you’ll want to keep that urge to shop on hold until you get a good working knowledge of what separates genuine from bogus. Considering the prices involved, you’ll definitely want to be sure you’re getting a hundred-year-old armoire and not a cheap replica. Antiques are quite high in demand and scammers are quick to jump at the first chance to con anyone who might not be skilled at discernment. Opportunely, it’s something anyone can become skilled at with the right amount of interest.

There are actually many markers of real and authentic antique but one of the first you’d like to look into in a piece is its dimensions. Keep in mind that wood contracts with age by up to an eighth of an inch per foot. If something looks too perfectly balanced from all sides that should be a red sign. You’ll also want to look into how sturdy the furniture remains to be after all that time. You can do this easily by sitting on the antique sofa, for instance, and feeling the thing under your hand while observing for cracks or openings.

As with anything that grows older by at least a hundred years, you’ll find genuine antique to be aimlessly discolored. If it survived all that time, it must have left some wear and tear marks. But although there will be these signs of age, nothing should make the corner blocks turn out to be a dissimilar color from the surrounding wood. If they’re not of the same color, different materials must have been used. This is yet one redder sign for anyone who doesn’t want anything short of authentic.

Spotting the genuine thing will need you to pay attention to the littlest details there are in something you’re made to believe to be antique. Knobs, screws, handles and other metal attachments should be perfectly in place, meaning no plugged holes which could be a sign that the furniture has been changed. If, indeed, it is antique, it would have lost its value.

And then you’ll just want to take your dealer’s word for it. Not that you’re casting prejudice on anyone, but you would like to ask for some form of guarantee with a purchase. Ask everything you need to know about that particular piece you’re eyeing. One way or another, you’ll get an idea of its authenticity just by listening to the way the dealer answers.

Now and then, it’s not as easy as that but if you listen closely, you can always ask others’ opinion on what the dealer has told you. Educating yourself by basically reading apposite literature will put you in a better position when shopping for antique furniture. Then you can further enrich your knowledge by expanding your reading to modern furniture and making comparisons.

If you’ve been meaning to beautify that extra room and make it into a guest bedroom, go ahead. Cost is not something that should change your mind about giving your guests a great place to stay while they’re with you. In point of fact, it might be quite a breeze making your guest bedroom look extraordinary even on a budget. Though, it will need you to be really involved in the process, from the research part all the way to getting just a little bit down and dirty.

Deciding to make a go for the guest bedroom you’re planning to design will have you first looking into the things that would almost certainly make your guests comfortable while being in your home. And as long as you have everything in that room in the right amounts and places, your guests will surely be grateful for the time and effort you put into making sure he has a wonderful stay.

First off, you’ll have to decide what direction to take in your décor. Will it be modern bedroom furniture that most of your guests would want or probably traditional bedroom furniture? You may also want to explore country bedroom furniture if most of your friends are somehow along that direction when it comes to taste and style. As mentioned, this room will not be about you but the people who will be coming over to spend a night or two. If a good impression is one thing you’d like to make, think of what would give your guests that. And what other way than to do it than to make sure that they’re warm, secure and at ease in this room you’ve lovingly designed yourself and reserved for them.

Once you know the direction of your design, you’ll have to look into the colors that will be playing around this part of your home. Bear in mind that next to consistency of design in terms of home interiors, colors play the biggest part. That’s for the reason that colors will be acting as an influential arbiter of whether or not things you’ve put in your design are going to come together and make the room look like one or scatter in pieces and make any well-thought of design fall apart. With regard to color, all you’ll ever think about is the standard of complements.

They don’t unavoidably have to be the same color at all. They don’t have to be in the same shade. Just as long as they complement each other, which mean they’re at least based on the same basic colors, they should work well with all the other cautiously planned moves you take with your design.

As for the finances part, yes, you can still achieve that perfect look for your guests in this bedroom you’ve singled out for them. In fact, getting good furniture to execute your design will not be a problem as there are many dealers who could give you great discounts for pieces that are of significantly good quality. Certainly, you can never argue with what a solid wood bedroom set can give you, but as long as you know how, where and what to look for, you should get something fairly close but with incredibly great savings.

So you just decided to live separately and are now renting a flat all by yourself. You want to make it the finest ever thing that comes close to home. Problem is, you don’t know where to start. And even if your bedroom has always been your favorite place on earth, you still don’t know how to make one for yourself because mom always did that for you since time immemorial. When you go in search of master bedroom furniture, you’re going to find that not all beds are created equal. In fact, many beds are made of different materials. Some are wood beds, while others are made of MDF (medium-density fiberboard). What is the difference in these two materials, and is one more appropriate than another for a particular use or type of bedroom furniture?

MDF is an engineered wood product formed from breaking down softwood into wood fibers that are then combined with wax and resin in high temperatures and pressure to create panels. In Australia, the main species of wood used to make MDF is plantation-grown radiata pine, though many other woods can be and are used around the world. You are probably thinking about the material that forms the bottom of a drawer in an inexpensive dresser or chest of drawers, but that’s not MDF – it’s particle board. MDF is denser than typical particle board but not as dense as hardwood.

Often, discount beds are made of MDF. Of course, this is not necessarily a bad thing, since MDF is a lighter weight material than hardwood and can be moved around more easily.

Often, casual bedroom furniture (as opposed to large, stately items) has a lot of MDF in it. While there may be some hardwood, most affordable modern bedroom furniture includes at least some MDF. Modern bedroom sets are built for the average American, who moves several times in his or her life and also changes decor in the home frequently. That calls for inexpensive furniture, as well as furniture that is easily portable. Whereas it takes several individuals to move large pieces like hardwood modern platform beds, one or two people can lift a bed made of MDF with ease.

One excellent use for MDF is in children’s bedroom furniture. Youth bedroom sets should never be extremely expensive, since your child will frequently outgrow or mature beyond the liking of the decorations and furnishings within his or her room. Also, with the abuse that is often heaped upon a child’s furniture, you wouldn’t want to spend a fortune on a nice, wooden bed that is meant to be a family heirloom, becoming an antique someday. Rather, you can purchase less expensive, more tolerant MDF furniture for your child’s room. This gives mobility to the furniture so it can be rearranged and saves money so that your pocketbook stings less when it’s time to redecorate your child’s room.

Aside from a kid’s bedroom set, you can also make good use of MDF in a guest room. Twin bedroom sets are frequently made of MDF and rarely found in hardwood form, and this can be the perfect furnishing for your guest room, especially if it is infrequently occupied. Even if you prefer hardwood furnishings in your own bedroom, MDF can be a great, inexpensive material to use in the rest of your home, saving you money and hassle when it’s time to move or redecorate.|When you go in search of master bedroom furniture, you’re going to find that not all beds are created equal. Rustic log furniture is timeless as it is beautiful. Many ski lodges, cabins, and resorts have them, but too few people ever think of putting it in their own home, or they feel that it’s not affordable for them. Ralph Kylloe in Rustic Traditions writes, “The first piece of rustic probably emerged when an early humanoid rolled a log over and sat on it in front of a fire.” Ralph has a point. Rustic log furniture can be anything as simple as a log or as complicated as an armoire. The essence of log furniture is the sense of eternity that resonates with it. It’s essentially wood captured at its most perfect time and held in an endless state of beauty.

Rustic log furniture is furniture that is created using authentic materials, typically wood, and kept in its natural form. Recently, rustic furniture has also expanded its definition to include anything that resembles handmade furniture. The term “resembles handmade furniture” is a fancy phrase for plastic made to look like wood, in my opinion. There are some mass retailers that have been making plastic furniture made to resemble authentic wood. However, we’ll be focusing more on real rustic log furniture in this segment.

Furniture doesn’t have to be confined to just large pieces that you need Paul Bunyan type men to move around. It’s any article in a room that makes it fit for living, so this could include mirrors, lights, artwork, and even kitchen utensils. This makes rustic log furniture affordable to attain and easy to make yourself. Even the slightest touch of rustic in your home will give you the cabin feeling without the fever.

There are a lot of resources you can find to begin making your own rustic log furniture. Some of it may be easy and others are for the advanced wood workers. To begin, I would buy a book specially written for making your own rustic log furniture. Once you get the hang of making your own you could basically take any wood making pattern for mirrors, lamp bases, or frames and combine it with a book for preserving wood. Your project may require special tools, but it would be a great investment because once you get the taste of making your own furniture… it doesn’t stop! The possibilities for making your own furniture or furnishings for your home are only limited by your imagination.

Rustic log furniture is a treasure for generations to come and when you have quality made pieces, you can feel the love and care that went into making it. It is possible to make your own, albeit hard, but the sensation of making your own furniture brings you closer to nature. The easiest way to acquire rustic furniture is by purchasing it from a retailer that specializes in these handmade pieces, or you could try estate sales. Regardless of how you obtain your furniture, it will bring a sense of warmth and comfort to your home. That’s the magic of wood.

Moving into a new home is a major treat. You are essentially given a blank canvas to make your own personal space. How you fill it will say a lot about you. This is particularly true in the master bedroom. The master bedroom is your space, your world, and people will glean a lot about you when they see it.
Let’s give them something stylish to talk about.
A good looking bedroom says this is a person who is in charge, knows style and has good taste. Thankfully, modern bedroom furniture is all over the market these days, due to it’s popularity with celebrities and in the home décor arena. That means you won’t have a problem finding the perfect modern bedroom furniture for your personality.
Selecting the right modern bedroom furniture is going to depend on the amount of space you have in your master bedroom. Usually the master bedroom is the largest room in the house and therefore any modern bedroom furniture will fit, but if you are purchasing an older home, or a less than traditional floor plan, this may not be the case.
Space is very important when putting modern bedroom furniture in a master bedroom as the whole idea of it is that it should have a large amount of space around all of the pieces. This type of furniture is all about being a minimalist. You don’t want so much of it that it crowds the room and leaves you feeling cramped. There should be a very open and inviting feel to the room. Take down essential room measurements so you know what will fit and what will be too tight.

Next, consider colors and materials. Generally, modern bedroom furniture will come in a combination of woods in browns or black, black lacquer, wrought iron or chrome. The feel of it is to be very industrial. This does not mean it isn’t attractive, as much of the it that is on the market is quite stunning. But, modern bedroom furniture is created out of sharp lines, geometric shapes and patterns. If a piece looks soft and country-esque, it’s not modern bedroom furniture.
While the base colors of this style of furniture are black, white, and dark browns, there is plenty of color to be had as of these furniture pieces are accented with splashes of gold, orange, red and other very bright, strong colors.

One final deliberation before you make y
our modern bedroom furniture selection. It’s not just the furniture that makes the room, but also the room itself. Look at the paint colors and the flooring you have in place. Will what you are considering work with these colors? There’s not much worse than bringing something into your home only to find out that while you loved the way it looked in the store, you hate it in your bedroom. If you positively love the furniture, think about a new coat of paint in a color that will work with what you purchase.

Killing mice is not an straightforward chore without any guidance. I have been in the pest control industry for over 15 years and have successfully controlled a lot of mouse infestations both in rural and urban areas and now I will share the tips of successful control with you.

The big difficulty frequently is the fact that a full survey of the area is not carried out. This is essential for a number of reasons. Firstly it will show the point of access where the mice are getting in. A fully grown fully developed mouse can squash through a gap of just 6mm! So think small when looking. In a domestic property the point of entry is ordinarily under a door or from around gaps in service pipes incoming under kitchen sinks. The clues to look out for are droppings which look like black grains of rice and a black smear mark which is made from the natural grease off the rodents fur as it travels backwards and forwards using the same path. A mouse will produce around 80 droppings a day so be aware that you may uncover several droppings but it doesn’t mean you have numerous mice.

When you have found the entry point then block it. For gaps at the base of doors use a draught excluder brush strip which works by creating an false impression to the mouses sense of touch that it is a solid object so it will not push through it. Fit the strip onto the outside of the door rather than the inside. If the hole is around brick work or pipe work then use a mixture of course grade wire wool, 5mm galvanised mesh and cement. Do not use expanding foam as mice will chew through this easily.

Once you have blocked the entry points then you need to start to get rid of the mice that are inside. This is best done with a combination of Mouse traps and Mouse poison. Firstly use a normal break back snap trap which should be placed at right angles to the wall floor junction. in other words the shortest edge of the trap should be touching the wall edge. If you have small pets or children ensure that the traps are placed safely for example under the kitchen units or in plastic bait boxes which can be bought to house traps safely. Add an attractive snack onto the trap to lure the mice to eat such as cake

Next choose your poison. Mice prefer a poison bait consisting of cut or chopped wheat. These poisons are readily available online and the wheat should be emptied in either trays or bait boxes where safety is needed. Mice need to eat from a lot of small feeding stations during their feeding time sometimes as numerous as up to 30 so ensure you cater for this and place a lot of small bait points around the area. A mouse will typically eat around 3g of food per day. Keep these bait points typically topped up until you get no further bait take. This can take up to 14 days depending on the poison used.

Kitchen Gadgets You Need

Posted by: freetraffic | Comments (0)

If you are only starting out or simply want a well-stocked kitchen, there are several questions to be answered in what you need in your kitchen. When just starting out, you’ll only desire some of the basics. If you’ve been cooking for quite a while, you could be interested by some of the new items available.

Everybody needs a good set of pots. These include saucepans, Dutch ovens, stockpots, and skillets. Saucepans can be used for everything from warming soup to steaming rice. Dutch ovens are especially used in the preparation of meats, stews and soups. Stockpots are simmering stocks for soups and are excellent for cooking pasta. If you are from the south, iron skillets are commonly used for frying.

Cooks of all experience levels need a collection of tools. Measuring cups are a must as are measuring spoons. Mixing bowls are mandatory if you’re going to be preparing a dish with multiple ingredients. Toaster, mixer ( either hand held or a stand ), and graters are other required tools. You will probably want a can opener. You’ll favor the electric kind but you may wish to get a can opener in case the electricity goes out. I have lost my electricity and wanted to open a can but only had an electric can opener. First thing I did was purchase a manual can opener so I could eat! Remember the slotted spoons, spatulas, and sieve.

You’ll definitely need some storage containers for your scrumptious leftovers. Plastic containers work well, but make sure they’re microwavable.

Cutlery is something that all cooks need . A top quality set of knives will simplify your preparations. There are quite a number of knives available. Paring knives are useful when peeling and cutting vegetables. Chef knives are used for many purposes. They can be used for slicing onion, mincing garlic and lots of other slicing duties.

If you do not need to destroy your counter tops, I’d suggest a pleasant cutting board.

There are lots of other tools that would be good to have, but not necessary. A Slap Chop food chopper is a useful gizmo to have in the kitchen instead of having to manually chop everything. A plant steamer is another nice kitchen tool. You can steam anything from plants to rice in these steamers.

The most vital thing not to forget in your kitchen is to have somebody else TO DO THE DISHES!

Water Heater Explosion

Posted by: freetraffic | Comments (0)

A water heater explosion can be a very dangerous event. If you don’t believe me, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pu3FwgIHsQA and
watch this video. Particularly notice what happens when the second heater blows. With the internal temperature rising above 300 degrees Fahrenheit, the heater explodes, sending chards of metal in all directions. The main body of the heater takes off like a rocket, flying hundreds of feet into the air. This explosion was so powerful that parts of the heater didn’t return to earth for 30 seconds. The final segment in the video shows an exploding heater shattering a tiny house to pieces. The water heater shoots over 400 feet into the air and small parts of it return to earth 40 seconds later. Exploding water heaters have been known to shatter houses, restaurants and schools. A particularly deadly water heater blast in 1982, in Texas, killed 6 children and 1 teacher. The cause of the disaster was lack of proper safety inspections, which allowed the heater to fall into disrepair.
What prevents this deadly event from occurring more often? Only one tiny little fixture, which protrudes from the heater, and is called the temperature and safety pressure valve protects home owners from a deadly explosion. When the temperature inside a heater reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit, this valve begins to operate. Rising pressure, caused by the expansion of heated water, is released through the valve in the form of steam and hot water. Despite the critical importance of this valve, many homeowners mistake the steam and water spurting from the valve for a minor plumbing problem, which they can handle themselves. All too often the ignorant homeowner will try and plug the valve or turn it off to prevent the water leak. The results can be deadly.
Four little rules can protect a homeowner from the dangers of a water heater explosion.
1. If the Temperature pressure valve is dripping or leaking, have a plumber repair it, and DO NOT plug the valve and DO NOT remove it.
2. Check your T & P valve at least once a year.
3. DO NOT let a handyman tinker with your water heater. Check out this video, to see what happened when a handyman tinkered with a hot water heater and damaged the T & P valve. http://www.azfamily.com/video/localnews-index.html?nvid=272736
4. If you have an old hot water heater, be sure that your tank has a T & P valve, as many of the old tanks were built without valves. If your tank doesn’t have a valve, call a plumber to install one.

These are small precautions but they prevent a real disaster such as you can see on this video site. (http://www.waterheaterblast.com/Links.htm is a link to a website which presents videos documenting water heater explosions, and describing the devastating effects of some of the most dramatic water heater explosion.) Under the worst of circumstances, the heater can take off like a rocket, travel through every story of your house, blow through the roof, and land blocks away causing immense damage to a neighbors house. Don’t let this happen to you. If you have any question about the repair of your hot water heater, or the patency of your T & P valve call a plumber today.
