Using Fruit Trees In A Small Garden

July 15, 2008

by Francis Jones

I think that we are all starting to begin to realize that the vast majority of us should make at least some change in the way we lead our lives. Nearly all of us could take more exercise on a regular basis and many of us could vastly improve our diets by introducing more fresh fruit and vegetables. A great way in which to get more fresh fruit is to grow your very own fruit trees in your backyard. Unfortunately, for most of us, we have a backyard which is a rather small space and therefore we are severely limited in which plants we can grow.

A great many of us understand that the fresher the fruit the healthier it is for us. Unfortunately the longer fruit is stored the lesser the vitamin and mineral content. Although most of us are beginning to understand the many advantages of eating organic produce the additional cost often means that few of us can afford the luxury. Happily, by growing fruit trees in our backyards, we can produce 100% organic fruit that is the freshest possible (we pick it and immediately eat it).

Today’s modern home in an urban setting often only has a very small space for a backyard garden. Such homes are usually very close together which can cause some problems, especially if you plan to plant fruit trees. Unfortunately most tree species can grow to an enormous size. A large tree in a small space can be the source of some very serious problems. Often the roots of a tree extend much further than people would think and, on a large tree this can lead to serious damage to foundations. There are also many other problems such as the shrub blocking the light but the most obvious and visible problem is the simple fact that a large tree in a small space just looks ridiculous and leaves little space for a garden.

It is surprising what can be created in such a small space as an urban backyard. Professional garden designers can create truly spectacular gardens in the smallest possible space. However, if you can not afford professional services it is perfectly possible to design a garden yourself. To create a suitable design you will need to spend a little time investigating which plants will be most suitable for use in small spaces.

Adding a point of interest to a smaller backyard can be problematic but one solution can be the addition of fruit trees. During the different seasons of the year a fruit tree will look vastly different. Even in the winter, a bare tree with frosted branches from which icicles hang, can look great but it is in the spring when it will look its finest. Spring is when the fruit tree will be covered in sweet smelling and fantastic looking blossom why, by fall, will (if fertilized) develop into fruit ready for harvest.

Dwarf fruit tree varieties have improved greatly in recent decades. The development of the dwarf root stock M9 (onto which the main stem of the fruit tree is grafted) has led to the creation of varieties which remain small but also manage to produce more fruit than previous dwarf varieties.

Incredibly it is now possible to purchase dwarf or compact fruit trees that will rarely, if ever, exceed a height of about 1.8m while still being able to produce the amount of fruit usually produced by a much larger tree. If 1.8m is too tall for your backyard you can plant the tree in a container which will slow and restrict growth. It is also possible to keep the size down by carefully pruning the fruit tree each year.

Amongst the most useful of fruit trees for the gardener with only a small space for a backyard, is the spur apple tree. While the tree can still grow up to 1.8m high it has such an upright habit that it often looks rather strange covered in a multitude of ripened apples.

You are not just limited to dwarf fruit trees, no, there are a large number of different fruits available in dwarf varieties such as pears, peaches, nectarines, figs, cherries, Kiwi fruit, plums and hazelnuts.

Timber Flooring vs Bamboo Flooring

July 12, 2008

by Mark Hutchison

Timber flooring, in the form of solid timber or newer veneers (also called floating timber), has long been the primary choice of people who want the warm look of wood on their floors, or who want to avoid carpet. For many years, there just weren’t any other options.

However, that has changed in recent years. Bamboo flooring is an environmentally friendly, strong, lasting alternative to using timber flooring. Here’s some information about bamboo and how it performs against floating and solid timber.

Floating timber floors, unlike the more expensive solid timber type, are made of a layer of wood veneer a few millimeters thick, laminated on top of a less expensive timber, or even a composite material made from waste wood. Bamboo floors are made of solid bamboo, offering greater durability over time for less than you’d pay for a solid timber floor. Plus, bamboo is a stronger, harder to damage material than almost any wood.

Unlike floating timber floors, bamboo is attached to the surface it sits on. This means that your bamboo floor will be a lot more stable than a floating timber floor. There’s no room for the joints between pieces to open up or move around.

Unlike both floating and solid timber floors, bamboo flooring doesn’t sound hollow when walked upon. It’s also a lot harder to scratch and easier to clean than either type of timber floor.

The lack of movement between the pieces of flooring also means that if your bamboo floor needs to be refinished, you’ll have a much better surface to work with than you would on solid timber. Veneered timber flooring cannot be refinished, since the wood surface is so thin.

Veneered timber flooring must be replaced if it’s damaged. Bamboo, on the other hand, can last another five to ten years if you have it resurfaced. It can even be resurfaced more times than just about any other floor type.

If you’re concerned about sustainability and the environment, bamboo is the better choice. While both timber and bamboo are renewable natural resources, it takes a long time for timber to renew. Veneered timber requires less hardwood to produce, but it still uses softwoods, composite woods, and even toxic and environmentally damaging glues.

Bamboo, on the other hand, recovers rapidly from being harvested. A single bamboo grove can be harvested once every five years. Look for products with non toxic glues and water based surface coatings, and you’ll be able to be certain that there’s less damage from flooring manufacture, too.

Compared to hardwood, bamboo will last a lot longer, and stand up better to daily wear. For those who are still concerned about the life of their bamboo floor, warranties are available. Remember that you get what you pay for - buy a product that’s made to last, rather than a bargain.

Where contraction and expansion are issues, you’ll find that bamboo offers a favorable performance. Unlike hardwood veneer floorings, bamboo will hold up to a number of resurfacings, and there’s no treatment or waxing required. To make sure you get a product that’s non toxic and fully sustainable, look for flooring that uses glues that won’t off gas and don’t contain toxic chemicals.

Anyone who’s curious about how bamboo flooring holds up when compared to hardwood should take a look online. It’s easy to see the whole range of available products and find out more about this great type of floor. It could be right for your home.

Should You Choose Timber Flooring Or Bamboo Flooring?

July 11, 2008

by Mark Hutchison

Timber flooring, in the form of solid timber or newer veneers (also called floating timber), has long been the primary choice of people who want the warm look of wood on their floors, or who want to avoid carpet. For many years, there just weren’t any other options.

Now, however, bamboo flooring offers a comparable, environmentally friendly, durable alternative to traditional timber. Here are some facts about how bamboo flooring performs against popular floating timber floors.

You also won’t have to deal with the hollow sound that many timber floors make when you walk on them, or the easy scratching. Bamboo flooring is solid sounding, easy to clean, and resistant to scratches and dings.

These types of practices occur mostly in countries that don’t regulate or enforce their regulations. All you have to do to find out if your bamboo is being grown sustainably is do a little research. There are plenty of products out there that are made with environmentally sustainable bamboo - just find out what you can to be sure you’re getting the product you’re paying for.

Compared to hardwood, bamboo will last a lot longer, and stand up better to daily wear. For those who are still concerned about the life of their bamboo floor, warranties are available. Remember that you get what you pay for - buy a product that’s made to last, rather than a bargain.

Where contraction and expansion due to weather are problems, bamboo holds up well. Compared to a hardwood veneer, it can be resurfaced more often, and needs no treatments or waxing to keep looking good. However, some products do contain environmentally unfriendly glues - look for nontoxic types when you buy your flooring.

If you’ve been considering bamboo flooring, or just want to find out more, take a look online. There are lots of stores offering bamboo flooring that’ll last for years, feel a lot like hardwood, and be kind to the world around you.

How To Install Your Blinds

July 11, 2008

by Maria Castronuevo

Now that you have considered getting blinds for your home, do not be daunted by the purchase or installation process. Everything will be just fine as long as you take the right measurements and are handy with a hammer and screwdriver.

When you are ready to install your blinds you will be very happy to know how easy it is to do and does not require a lot of intricate steps. Blinds can be installed no matter the age or gender of the person.

It is essential that you have accurate measurements for the blinds that will be installed in your home. A proper fit both in height and width is very important for the operation of the blind and how it looks in your room. You don’t want to have window coverings that are too short or too long either. Now that you have all the correct measurements, it is time to go shopping for the blinds.

After you have them and bring them home, it is time to start the installation process.

First get a pencil. While holding your blinds in the spot where you want them to hang, mark the wall with the pencil on both sides of the blinds because this is where the brackets will go. Having done this will ensure that your brackets will be installed perfectly and the blinds will at the right height. Time to go get your hammer and screwdriver.

Take both brackets for your blinds and attach both of them to the wall where you made the marks, one bracket per mark. These usually attach with small screws, normally three or four to a bracket. If the screws do not want to go into the wall easily, simply tap them gently once or twice with the hammer to start them, and then continue with the screwdriver. Make sure to line the brackets up precisely with the marks on the wall during the installation, so that they are far enough apart to hold the blinds. It is very important that the open side of the bracket is facing the front so that the blinds can slide into it.

At this time you will be installing the blinds into the brackets. They should slide easily into the open ends of the brackets and they should also feel snug and secure. There is a small piece used to slide over the open side of the brackets that will lock the blinds in place and give your blinds a finished look.

Now simply stand back and admire your beautiful new blinds, installed perfectly by you without any professional help.

Choosing Blinds in Maidstone or Ashford in Kent

July 3, 2008

by Paul Turner

There are lots of ways of buying vertical, roller, roman blinds etc in Kent. Choosing the right blinds company can be a dilema.

Having worked in the blinds industry please allow me to offer some pointers to help you in your choice.

I would suggest you buy made to measure blinds as these will offer a superior fit and are always much better quality than mass produced blinds that you have to cut down yourself. You will always compromise on colour, fabric choice and fit with this style of blinds. You should also consider the amount of time it will take you to fit the blinds if you have no experience.

You should consider buying your blinds from a blind supplier who will come out to your home and measure your windows as well as fit your blinds for you. Again I have seen people repent at having chosen colours in a shop under different lighting that doesn’t look the same in their own home.

An excellent blind supplier in the Ashford and Maidstone areas is Homestyle Blinds. The owner, John Holmes really goes out fo his way to offer excellent customer service as this is what he builds his business on.

Homestyle Blinds in visit at a time to suit and present the fabrics to you along with any advice he can offer. Whilst this advice is free and without obligation they will aways allow you the courtesy of allowing you to choose what is right for you.

Home Radiant Heating Systems

July 1, 2008

by John Krell www.krelldistributing.com

Warming your home using radiant heating is not a new concept. Hypocausts were invented by chilly Romans to keep their public baths and villas of the privileged warm and comfortable.

Whilst the modern-day version of the hypocaust is far easier to install and run, no servants are necessary to keep the fires burning as in Roman times for example, the same basic principle is used in this form of radiant heating used for in-floor heating.

Heated water is pumped through tubing laid in a grid pattern under the floor of the designated room. The radiant heat rises gently to warm the air, and ensures that no matter what floor covering you have, carpet, tiles, wood or even just concrete, the floor will always feel warm and inviting on bare feet.

The necessary hot water can be supplied by an existing boiler connected to the in-floor heating system, or if preferred, a separate boiler can be installed dedicated solely to the task.

Free hot water is available if you choose the increasingly popular option of solar panels as a heating method. Although this may increase installation costs somewhat, the extra cost is soon overhauled because as long as the sun continues to shine then hot water is limitless.

The beauty of these radiant heat in-floor heating systems is that they can be retro-fitted. If you already have a tile floor for example, it can be laid on top and a new surface fitted as it only adds about 20 cm depth.

Most hot water radiant heating systems are installed by laying a grid formation of tubing which is then embedded in a thin concrete layer. Heat diffusing aluminum is laid on top of this followed by your chosen floor covering.

Probably the best and most effective flooring to use with radiant heating is a tiled floor. Although radiant heat works well with linoleum, vinyl, wood or carpet, ceramic tiles are great for storing and conducting heat.

Another form of radiant heating for your home is the wall or ceiling mounted panel. These work in the same way as the in-floor heating system, using heated electric cables or piped hot water to generate radiant heat.

The ceiling panels however will naturally radiate heat downwards on to the heads of those standing below which can be a little off-putting for some, and in order to gain maximum benefit from wall panels it is best to be within line-of-sight and sitting or standing reasonably close to feel the radiant heat.

In-floor heating is undoubtedly efficient and is low-cost to run, but another major factor in its popularity is the absence of any ugly panels or radiators taking up space in the home.

As in-floor heating systems can be thermostatically controlled, gather a store of heat when electric companies offer off-peak rates and then allow the radiant heating to warm your home over a period of 10-12 hours, it is little surprise that this Roman wonder is fast becoming the worlds most popular form of home heating.
