Signs, Symptoms And Menopause: What Your Body Says

August 18, 2008

by Barry Crewse

The Symptoms of menopause. Or peri menopause for some women. Just that one word alone can strike trepidation into the hearts of the most stalwart women. Menopause is that fork in the road of life of every woman that, when it occurs, changes her life she has known since puberty. What are the signs and symptoms of menopause? Let’s explore.

Menopause can strike a women at almost anytime beyond the age of 30 but on average occurs any time from about 40 to 59. Often times many women find that they begin menopause at about the age their mothers did but this is not a hard and fast rule.

The only exception to this is in women who have had both ovaries and uterus surgically removed and in this instance will experience what is known as “surgical menopause.” If the ovaries remain after surgery then gradual menopause will take place as natural hormones are produced less over time.

Peri menopause in many cases can precede actual menopause. The ovaries begin producing less of the hormones progesterone and estrogen. When this occurs gradually the change begins and signs and symptoms of menopause can be very slight.

The most obvious signs of impending menopause is the noticeable skipping or delayed period or in some cases your periods occur more closer together than usual. Flow volumes are also affected and will be heavier or in some women lighter than normal.

Hot flashes are one of the most prominent early symptoms as well as they begin in your chest area and quickly pulsate and radiate into your head. Your skin can turn red and sweating most often happens giving this symptom it infamous name.

Dizziness and nausea may also occur as well as headaches and rapid heartbeat. Some women experience others as well but in the early stages these are the most common signs and symptoms of menopause.

Night sweats are hot flashes occurring at night of course and in most cases produce the side effect of irregular sleeping patterns. The feeling of being tired is usually the next symptom of hot flashes for many women.

Quite often emotional symptoms also occur which can include sadness, tiredness, anxiety, frustration and others. Seeing your physician is your best defense against these types of symptoms. There are treatments available that can help alleviate these symptoms and help make them more tolerable.

The process of peri menopause and menopause in general is usually very gradual and can take several years to run it’s course. Blood test can be taken by your physician to determine what stage of menopause your are in but in most cases when no period has taken place for 12 months, menopause has ended.

It is important to remember that all women experience menopause in different ways. The process can be fairly quick for some women and symptoms mild but for other it can take longer with more discomfort.

Luckily we live in an age where there are many new treatment plans available in both natural and prescription medications which also include hormone replacement therapy. The natural approach is always suggested first as many women respond well but you should always consult your physician about any prescribed or hormone treatment you may consider.

Treadmill Parts

August 6, 2008

by Ray Lam

By knowing about all the parts of the treadmill, their names, and their working would not only add to your knowledge but will be useful for you in the long run also. If unluckily, you got something broken, or a certain part has to be fixed, your knowledge of the treadmill parts will help you here. In this regard, you will have to check if that particular part comes under the guarantee ( in most treadmills the parts are covered in the warranty).

The first thing to do if one of your treadmill parts stops working, is to see if the part is covered under its warranty. This will be easy to determine and most treadmills do come with a warranty. However, if your treadmill did not, then you need to look at buying replacement treadmill parts. The easiest way to replace one of your broken treadmill parts is by using the internet. It is relatively easy to get replacement treadmill parts online, and you can do this by putting in a simple search.

When you get ready to repair your treadmill, there are several places to check for problems. The best place to start looking is the belt and the deck. Each step described will, of course, depend on the model and brand you have. To check out the deck and the belt, you must loosen the tension roller. Be careful, though. If you get it too loose, you will lose the bolts out of the roller shaft. Next, inspect the belt itself for a smooth, consistent feel. Any uneven wear or potential seam failure requires a complete replacement of the belt. The deck should also be very smooth.

It is that part of the treadmill which is to be replaced after investigative research. The first thing in this regard is to check the compatibility of the belt, you might be getting, with your exercising unit. The customer services must be utilized before the deal is made as they play a very informative and helpful role in purchasing an item.

Some of the most common treadmill parts that individuals are looking for include new belts, motors, control boards, and various pieces of electronic circuitry that they have gone bad. Some of these are relatively easy to repair if you are at least a little bit handy. This will include replacing the motor or perhaps the drive belt. There may be times where you also want to change some of these parts in order to beef up your machine a little bit and make it more usable. Regardless, you can purchase upgraded parts from the same place that you can usually purchase the standard parts.

Was The Original Coral Calcium The Fountain Of Youth?

August 2, 2008

by Lee Dobbins

Coral calcium was introduced to the western culture some 500 years ago. Spanish explorers had “discovered” coral calcium in Okinawa and brought it back to Europe. These explorers had seen the beneficial effects of what was called the coral sand (the original coral calcium) on the people living on the coral islands. They brought ships full of this sand back to Spain so that the Spanish could benefit from the wondrous minerals.

The Spaniards must have been as interested in alternative health remedies back then as we are today because Spain boasts historic monuments which are considered to be the oldest drugstores in the world and on their shelves are clay pots that contain coral calcium labels.

But, legend has it that the health benefits of coral calcium were discovered much earlier. It is said a Chinese emperor send explorers off to find a land of heaven on earth which was thought to exist off the east coast of China. He wanted them to return with the fountain of youth - or elixir of life that was rumored to exist there.

But luck or perseverance, the explorers found this magical place and it did have an elixir of life. The problem was that it was such a beautiful place and the elixir (the original coral calcium) so wonderful that none of the explorers wanted to return to the emperor with it! This island is only described in legend as the province of Okinawa, a coral based island in the midst of pristine, clear seas.

By the 1990s, the mainland Japan had been enlightened about the health benefits of coral calcium consumption. Countries such as China, Russia, Sweden, France, and Britain were also taken over by this knowledge. The United States of America first learned about coral calcium in the 1970s as a modern dietary supplement.

In the western world the usage of original coral calcium as a nutritional supplement has been growing .Many people, who are aware of the health benefits of this dietary supplement take is as an essential part of their diet. It can be found in supplement and powder form and contains calcium, of course, as well as other important minerals - if you buy it be sure you get the original marine calcium.

Symptoms Of Inflammatory Breast Cancer

August 2, 2008

by Roselyn Capen

Of all the types of breast cancer, the one claiming more lives than not is Inflammatory breast cancer. IBC is a very aggressive cancer, and it gets its name from the symptoms women diagnosed with it show. This can occur in women of any age, and is fortunately, a rare type of cancer. Inflammatory breast cancer can also develop in men, though the chances are extremely thin.

IBC gives rise to cancer cells that attack the lymph vessels in the breast. It blocks the vessels, which gives rise to extreme swelling and reddish appearance of the breasts. Research says occurrence of IBC can differ with ethnicity, African American women being more prone, and that too, at a younger age, than White women. Also, it can occur in very young women of any other age, too. This is sad because other forms of breast cancer mostly develop in middle-aged women, while disabling young women to enjoy their lives.

Inflammatory breast cancer can start showing symptoms early on, and become very advanced within a matter or few days. This can be very sad, especially when women delay seeking medical advice regarding the symptoms, as the cancer can advance very rapidly, and it can be very late already, when they seek medical help. However, the symptoms for IBC are so alarming that women almost immediately seek advice, and this is one reason for relatively earlier diagnosis of Inflammatory breast cancer, in most cases.

The unique characteristic of Inflammatory breast cancer is that no lump formation is associated with it. This characteristic makes it all the more dangerous, because mammography and ultrasound can not detect it, and it often goes undiagnosed, or misdiagnosed. Biopsy is the best method for diagnosing IBC.

Typical symptoms for Inflammatory breast cancer are extreme reddish to purple-ish, bruised appearance of the breasts, tenderness and immense swelling, which accounts for its inflamed appearance. The skin around the breasts may be rough and uneven, the nipples may get inverted, there might be persistent itching and heaviness accompanied with burning aching sensations. Usual symptoms like change in color and texture of areola and breasts are present, too. You might also have swellings under your arm and above and below your collarbone, which you should never ignore.

The most common misdiagnosis of Inflammatory breast cancer is mastitis. Mastitis is just a breast infection that shows the same symptoms like redness and swelling, as IBC. After a week or two of treatment for mastitis, your symptoms should start disappearing; otherwise, it’s not mastitis. Lymph vessels can get blocked because of other reasons than cancer, too, such as operations on the chest. This is not any type of cancer. The best way of making sure is getting a biopsy done.

The mortality rate for IBC used to be 100% some decades back. Now, due to great advancement in technology, it has dropped down to 30% to 50%. Systemic therapy is a great treatment option with both chemotherapy and hormone therapy tried. This is usually followed by a surgery - neoadjuvant therapy - which should ideally be followed by mastectomy. Radiation therapy following the above combination of treatments reduces the chances of a redevelopment of cancer greatly.

Through all the misery of Inflammatory breast cancer, you should remember the figures of mortality rate decreasing immensely. These indicate that you have a great chance of fighting if off and being happy like all other people that you know.

Toric Contact Lenses

July 31, 2008

by Ray Lam

For years, patients suffering from astigmatism were told they could not correct their vision by wearing contact lenses. That all changed in 1978 when the first toric contact lens was approved for distribution. By the late nineties astigmatic patients were able to finally wear disposable lenses and in 2002 CIBA Vision introduced Focus Dailies Toric, the worlds first daily disposable toric contact lens.

Toric lenses are manufactured with curvatures at different angles, one for astigmatism and the other nearsightedness or farsightedness. In order to provide crisp vision, it is not acceptable for a toric lens to rotate on your eye so the lenses are made with a mechanism that keeps the lens stable.

Toric lenses can be either soft or Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP). The RGP lenses are stiffer than the soft ones and retain their shape on the cornea better. This can result in crisper vision for some people, although many do not notice any difference between the soft and RGP lenses.

The Toric contact lens has a small line on the lens near the identifying numbers to indicate the bottom of the lens. If you orient the lens properly you can avoid the uncomfortable feeling. The Toric contact lens is also heavier in weight so it can take up to a week or more to find comfort when you are first trying them.

Not everyone with an astigmatism needs toric lenses. If the astigmatism is mild - between 0 and 1.00 diopter - you may be able to wear a soft or RGP lens. RGP lenses might fare better as they are rigid and can use the tears in your eyes to work with the misshapen cornea. You might even be able to use a high prescription of regular soft contacts. Your eye doctor will know which you need and you may have to try a few before you find the perfect lens for you.

Rigid gas permeable Toric contact lenses. They are more durable and resist the accumulation of harmful materials. Priced reasonably they offer you a clear vision though you may take a little time adjusting to them.

Diabetes Treatment Methods

July 29, 2008

by Julia Hanf

Exactly how diabetes is treated depends on a number of factors: which type the patient has, how severe it is, the age of the patient and others.

For example, pregnant women may suffer from gestational diabetes, which most often begins between the 24th and 28th week; after birth this condition can disappear. If mild, gestational diabetes may need no treatment other than careful monitoring; other cases may need dietary adjustments or medications. On the other side of the spectrum, Type 1 diabetes is not curable with current methods and will generally need lifetime insulin treatments.

But there are other forms of treatment, many of them amounting virtually or literally to self-care.

More extensive treatments may involve drugs other than insulin.

One such advanced option, the Sulfonylureas (like Micronase and Glucotrol) aid the body’s insulin production. This medicine is useful for Type 1 diabetics, since they produce inadequate insulin. Type 2 diabetes is characterized by inefficient insulin use; Biguanides (like Glucophage) help the body use insulin more efficiently.

Drugs which act on the glucose levels are also used. Meglitinides (Prandin) are used to control the blood glucose level after eating. The absorption of sugars during digestion can be slowed with Alpha-glucosiadase inhibitors (Precose).

Every treatment option must be accompanied by careful monitoring of the blood glucose levels. This is important so that the patient and his or her health care provider can concentrate on finding the right treatment regimen.

Some cases of diabetes, especially Type 2, can be controlled through proper exercise and diet, without medication. Elevated glucose levels stemming from pre-diabetes, rather then full-blown diabetes are especially responsive to diet and exercise.

The importance of diet can be deduced by the strong connection between Type 2 diabetes and obesity. If you carry most of your weight around the waist you are especially at risk. In such cases, losing sufficient weight may bring the blood glucose levels back to normal so that no medications are needed.

Lifestyle adjustments for weight loss bring other benefits as well. Heart health is improved by regulating the type and number of carbohydrates, drinking alcohol in moderation, and making other nutritional changes; this reduces the chance of stroke and heart attack.

The blood glucose level is directly lowered by regular physical activity. Exercise improves immunity and brings other benefits. One important benefit is stress reduction. Stress can make diabetes worse, by affecting the hormones that regulate insulin, yet people are often stressed by worrying over their diabetes. By improving overall health, exercise along with an attitude adjustment, can reduce stress.

If insulin is needed in addition to diet and exercise, you may not need injections. Oral insulin has been successful. The FDA has also approved insulin inhalers as a diabetes treatment. Another option for some is the insulin pump; it monitors glucose levels automatically and releases the correct amount of insulin into the body.

If you suspect diabetes, don’t wait to get tested. Only a doctor can give the tests needed and determine if you have diabetes and what treatment you may need. The early you are diagnosed the easier diabetes is to treat.

Fat Loss 4 Idiots Put to the Test

July 29, 2008

by Dave Jackson

Do you live in an area that is excellent for getting out and doing things, but you don’t make time for exercise because you feel it might be a waste of time? Man, that’s me all over - we lived in Texas and I said it was too hot in the summer to get out and then when we moved to Florida I said I’d be on the beach every day. But life gets in the way and I found myself at 200 pounds.

The Internet, being the fine tool that it is and always with an answer, I started searching for the best ways to lose fat - fat I had around my belly and chest. I knew that if I did some research I could find one that had worked for many people and I would make that one my choice as well. With the holidays still a ways off, this was a good challenge.

One of the first programs I saw online was this thing called Fat Loss 4 Idiots, a take-off on the myriad of “for Dummies” books and something I thought might be good because I am really a step-by-step visual person. Show me the path and I’ll make it. Alongside the Fat Loss 4 Idiots I found tons of ads for programs promising I could lose 45 pounds in 40 days, 18 pounds in 4 days. Scary stuff.

The more I looked into the Idiots program, the better it seemed to fit my lifestyle. I needed something pretty flexible and their program does fit that. And I wanted to be mentally ready for this. I have too many programs and courses sitting on my shelves where either my skill set wasn’t right or I could not afford the time necessary to make them work. I did believe I could lose this fat - this time it had to go.

What could be so hard with a program that had two variables - food intake and exercise? But I found out with Fat Loss 4 Idiots (almost called it “dummies”) that there is more to it - there is the scheduling part and the breakdown of what foods and what exercises. That’s exactly where I needed help. Like I say - show me the path… So this was very good for me.

One cool thing about Fat Loss 4 Idiots, and this is why I know these guys have done their homework, is they make sure you are at a place where you believe you can lose the fat. It really is a mind thing - because if you don’t really believe it - you will sabotage the program and fall off the wagon. I didn’t want to do that because I was doing this for me and I needed to get in shape this time.

That’s why I was so happy when I saw how thorough the program is. I knew this was something that I could get into and accomplish and feel good in the process. Every year I resolve to lose weight, get in shape, and it doesn’t work. Where this program differs is that it is not simply a resolution, it’s a step-by-step system that you follow along. And when you need help if you have a question about your lifestyle, they are there to help.

And even the best programs won’t work for you if you simply don’t believe in the system. That would be like the Olympians not believing they could actually win. Fat Loss 4 Idiots has been called everything, but for me it was a solid program with hundreds of people who have lost tons of fat. I don’t need to defend it - it stands on its own. I wanted this to work and it did. I trust it will for you as well.

Preventing Toxoplasmosis in Cats and Humans

July 29, 2008

by Kurt Schmitt

Preventing toxoplasmosis infection involves some simple precautionary steps for both you and your cat. While there’s no guarantee that you or your cat won’t get it, every step you take may help.

A single-celled parasite called Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is responsible for Toxoplasmosis infections. Both humans and cats, as well as other mammals and birds may become infected through contact with this organism. Wild and domestic cats are the definitive hosts for Toxoplasma, which means that the feline is the animal the organism uses to reproduce.

According to reports from the Centers for Disease Control, the Toxoplasma parasite is found throughout the world, and as many as 60 million people in the United States may carry it. Estimates are that anywhere between 20 percent and 80 percent of populations worldwide may have it. Toxoplasmosis symptoms, however, are relatively rare, causing few people to seek treatment. Cats that are infected may or may not show signs of the disease as well.

In underdeveloped countries, walking on infected soil with unprotected feet is a factor. For the most part, though, the primary risk factor is from eating undercooked or raw meat.

Below are a few of the things you can do to prevent contracting toxoplasmosis yourself.

Do not eat undercooked or raw meat. If you touch raw meat, do not touch your face until you’ve cleaned your hands thoroughly.

Wash your hands, cutting boards, utensils, and sink with soap and warm water.

Wash all raw vegetables and fruits thoroughly.

Get someone else to empty the cat litter box. Pregnant women should take special precautions and have someone else on cat box duty.

Ensure that the litter box is cleaned at least once per day or more in order to dispose of cat feces before it becomes infective.

If you handle the cat box duties yourself, wear a mask and disposable rubber gloves and avoid breathing the dust. Wash your hands after cleaning the box.

While outdoors, avoid sandboxes as cats may use them as litter boxes.

Wear gloves when gardening. Keep your hands away from your eyes, mouth, and nose. Wash your hands when finished.

Avoid drinking unpasteurized milk products, especially goat’s milk.

Here are some things you can do to help prevent your cat from contracting the disease.

Do not feed your cat raw or undercooked meat.

Make your cat an indoor cat to prevent her from hunting birds or rodents that might be carrying the disease.

Keep your cat inside to prevent it from coming in contact with contaminated soil, plants, or insects.

How to ease the pain in a newly pierced ear.

July 29, 2008

by Russ Basel

What is going on with my pierced ear? You have been waiting for awhile or just decided that a nice earring would enhance your looks. Now you talked to your friends and decided to get your piercing done. What they have said is do some checking around or find someone in the area that does a good job. Maybe you should have waited? Or possibly you are looking for more about getting your ear pierced safely?

Your earlobe is sore. Do not use hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol these hinder healing and stop new skin cell growth. Stay away from ointments. Not only are these messy they tend to slow oxygen from getting to the sore area thus hindering the healing process. Do use salt soaks. This provides the best cleaning for a ring or stud in the ear. It will loosen dry material on the area. This is a mix of a teaspoon of sea or table salt. Dissolved in eight onces of warm water. A good way to bathe the sore spot.

Clean the surrounding skin, mild antiseptic products such as bactine or a good liquid antibacterial soap. Then dilute 50/50 with water, if soap is still harsh. Do not use perfumed soap products do to chemicals that could cause further irritation.

Two or three times a day saturate a cotton swab with the cleaning solution. Apply this to the pierced area and let it soak in for a three to five minutes. This should loosen any dried matter around the pierced area on your ear(s). Rotate the jewelry while the area is still wet. These tips and more are available at bodypiercingsafe.com thanks for reading.
