Sealing Your Basement Floor Correctly

July 29, 2008

by Eric Slarkowski

If your basement floor or walls are leaking, you’re probably at your wit’s end, frustrated and thinking of moving or selling your home. You need not worry. You can do this DIY project with just a little time and effort. All you’re going to need is some waterproof masonry sealer and your basement walls and floors will be like new again. The sealer is a solution that you mix with water to get a cement-like appearance. It’s important that the area to be sealed is clean and dry before you apply the seal.

For the walls, you’ll need to fill in any holes and cracks with the sealer. You can use a paint roller, a sponge, masonry sealer or concrete trowel to apply the sealer. Make sure you use mortar sand to seal any big areas that need repair. Again, it is vital that the area you are sealing be clean and dry before your apply the sealer and mortar seal. If you’re going to do your own home repair, it’s important that it’s done correctly. The container of sealer will usually have excellent directions on the package.

Another option for the protection of basement walls is masonry paint. It also blocks the outside from leaking water or moisture. You need to clean the walls thoroughly. For concrete, the best way to get the walls clean is with a wired brush and a drill and wired wheel attachment. When the walls are clean and dry, you have to apply a primer prior to painting them. The primer helps to condition the walls and make the paint go on smoother.

Many homeowners choose to use masonry paint and primers on their basement walls even if they don’t leak. They do it as a preventative measure and a better appearance. Preventative maintenance will not only prevent problems in the futures but also help to preserve the quality and equity of your home.

Unfortunately, many people fail to take care of their home in small ways that matter, feeling they will need thousands of dollars. In many cases, the preventative maintenance is much cheaper than repairs down the road. Some homeowners take out a second mortgage on their home to give them cash for home repairs. Sometimes, this can’t be avoided because eventually all things need to be replaced. However, in many situations, good maintenance will prevent things from needing to be replaced as soon.

The mistake that many homeowners make is feeling that they can’t afford a certain maintenance on their home. For instance replacing a leaky bathtub may cost money now. However, failure to replace it will result in the floor eventually rotting from the water, costing more money for repairs than the bathtub would have cost. Take care of your home and it will take care of you.

Dinnerware: Making Meals Into Events

July 29, 2008

by Fabian Toulouse

At the dawn of what most historians agree is the modern world, the years between 1815 and 1830, the most lavish dinner in the best homes in England consisted of only two courses?paltry by our standards. Of course, each course commonly consisted of twenty-five different dishes spread all over the table! The first course consisted of soups, trays laden with meats of all kind, whole fish, pies, and vegetables. The second course was ?lighter??deer, ham. roast goose, puddings and sweets. The Diners ?skirmished? among the serving pieces, taking a bit of everything.

Just imagine the serving pieces used to host such a spread-not to mention the dinnerware! The amount of storage space alone would require a butler’s pantry the size of a modern garage! Few private hostesses could manage such a massive amount of food today, and just as well-imagine the outcry from the health community at such overeating!

Not needing soup tureens and meat platters by the dozen these days, the modern hostess can afford to be choosier about the dinnerware she buys. New brides and distinctive hostesses have long considered Gearys to provide the highest quality table settings available, hand selected from around the globe. Browsing amongst brand names that have graced the tables of popes and noblemen is a lovely experience.

There are designs to suit any style, from the most traditional to the most ultra-modern. Set your table in the elegant style of those 19th century epicurean giants or serve your meals on something a little more up to date. From incredibly exquisite hand painted plates featuring fruits, flora and fauna to the simplest white dinnerware, you can find dinnerware to set the finest of tables.

Fine quality dinnerware elevates a simple meal into an event to be enjoyed at length. Graceful table settings create a mood of distinction and make any occasion more momentous. With the best China and porcelain, there is no such thing as an “everyday” meal!

A Healthy Plan for Your Vegetarian Toddler

July 29, 2008

by Ashley King

Many people have the idea that feeding a toddler a vegetarian diet is not safe. It is quite healthy if your little one is getting all of the proper nutrients.

Some of the benefits to a lifelong, proper vegetarian diet include a lower risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and heart disease. If you bring your toddler up with these foods, chances are he or she will not balk at them later on.

The #1 problem with vegetarianism and toddler nutrition is to make sure that your child gets enough calories and nutrients. Your toddler needs calorie consumption to ensure that he has enough energy to grow and play hard. This needs to carry him not only through these very important toddler years but up through the challenging teenage years!

It can be difficult to plan a balanced vegetarian toddler menu that will give her sufficient amounts of iron and protein. Some toddlers are picky eaters as well as having smaller appetites, and it can be a real challenge to coax them to consume the amount of beans and vegetables that will ensure they get the nutrients they need. Therefore, if you have a vegetarian toddler, make sure you serve up food that is packed with as many nutrients as possible.

Soybeans and tofu are an excellent source of protein for grownups and children over four. For toddlers, however, they shouldn’t be used as the main source of protein. For your littlest ones, complement the tofu or soybeans that you serve with soymilk that has been fortified with vitamins and minerals. In addition to providing some protein, it will also improve your toddler’s diet by providing calcium, and vitamins A and D, which can frequently be hard to get in a vegan diet.

You will find iron in many vegetarian-friendly foods. Great sources of iron include kidney beans, green beans, spinach, and lima beans. However, iron from vegetables can be harder for the body to absorb properly than iron from animal products. This process can become easier if you serve a Vitamin C rich food with those beans or spinach. Some great sources of Vitamin C are oranges, red peppers, tomatoes, broccoli and cantaloupe.

It will take quite a bit of work on your part to raise a healthy vegan. You may have to supplement your toddler’s diet to make sure they get all the nutrition that their little bodies need.

Getting sufficient amounts of Vitamin B-12 may be especially hard for vegans. Although vegetables contain some B-12 vitamins, they are not easily absorbed by the body. Your toddler’s doctor can recommend a B-12 supplement that’s appropriate for toddlers.

Calcium is another important consideration for your vegetarian child’s nutrition plan. Calcium plays a role in making strong bones and facilitates normal growth. Opt for soymilk that is fortified with calcium, but be sure it also contains other nutrients important to your toddler’s diet.

If you happen to see a gathering of vegans, you may notice that the children stand out. These little ones often provide glowing testimonies that vegan children can attain a certain level of health, grow normally, be very active and smarter than the average child.

Showing a Tough Toddler Who’s Boss at Bedtime

July 29, 2008

by Ashley King

It can be, at times, quite frustrating to put your toddler down for bedtime. In order to make the transition into sleep as smooth as possible, you may want to try out some of the following techniques.

The most important consideration should be consistency in bed times and waking times. If your toddler gets used to a specific schedule, then it will be easier for him to get to bed at night. The sooner you establish a routine, the easier it will be over the long term to get him to sleep without a fuss.

The lead-up to bedtime should be the same each night, and make sure any activities are quiet and restful. Give your little one a snack, tell a bedtime story, pop in a brief video or play a quiet game. Keep to the same routine every night.

Don’t lie down in bed with your toddler, waiting for him to fall asleep. This may end up causing the reverse reaction, stimulating your toddler to remain wakeful and demand more games and stories.

A better approach would be to tell your toddler that you need to get something done and you will be right back to check on him. It is very likely that your child will fall asleep before you return.

You may want to discuss the events of your toddler’s day. The mood should remain calm and soothing, and your child should not become too excited in the process. Some parents turn this into story time, featuring their toddler in the starring role.

After your toddler gets older, if a regular bedtime has been established and stuck to, then the job will become so much simpler. Bedtime could even become a daily event that is looked forward to by your child as a special family time. Remember that children thrive on consistency and repetition.

However, if your child continually resists sleep, it may be a good idea to consult your pediatrician to rule out any medical causes for the behavior.

Enhance Lighting In The Kitchen

July 29, 2008

by Eric Slarkowski

Remodeling counter top may be easier than you think. There is no reason for counter top renovations to be extremely difficult. The degree of difficulty that it takes for removal of the current counter depends on what it is made of. Also the length of time that the counter top has been down also will influence the level of difficulty. Laminated counter tops are attached with glue to wood surfaces. This can require a solvent to loosen up the glue. If that doesn’t work then you may have to gouge through the wood before it can be completely removed.

Sometimes the best way to remodel kitchen counter tops is to replace the whole top. Taking it off of the counter base should be a very easy ordeal. Simply loosen a few screws and bolts and take it off. The cabinets should now be exposed and the surface that the counter is connected to can be washed and sanded to make room for the placement of a new counter top.

The type of counter top chosen for the remodel is based on personal preference and the allotted budget. Pre-made counter tops can be purchased from home improvement stores. They can be set in place with ease and connected to cabinets. This is the simplest way to remodel counter tops if you are installing them yourself. Having a professional put down counter top is of course, the easiest way possible.

Do with stone or granite if you are looking for a more attractive counter top. Marble is also a great choice for counter tops. While it can be more costly than traditional counter top, it is much more beautiful than a wood top. Having these counter tops ordered and precut is a must, unless the homeowner is skilled enough to do this.

A hole for the kitchen sink and water supplies has to be made fro custom jobs. The splash board has to be placed correctly in order to stop water from coming into the cabinets. This type of counter remodeling is a little bit more difficult so a professional should probably the one to do it. Working with water and stone can be very difficult and if stone if cut the wrong way it can wind up costing a fortune to get it fixed.

Vinyl and plastic countertops are not recommended. They can easily be cut by utensils and they often do not match the rest of the dcor. Countertops should fit in nicely with the rest of the room. Be sure that you find a material that looks great with the rest of your decor.

Leather Work Aprons and the Workplace

July 29, 2008

by Ethan O. Tanner

When you think of leather goods, a leather apron is probably the last item to come to mind. Most often we think of aprons as being made from cotton or linen. Although you probably wouldn’t wear a leather apron around your home, they do have a function as work aprons in some professions and activities.

Leather work aprons come in a wide variety of styles. They are sought after because they are durable, flame and heat resistant, stain resistant, and offer the wearer protection not found in aprons from conventional cloth. Leather aprons are perfect for those who work in professions such as a welder, machinist, waiter, or gardener.

A leather work apron is favorable for the serving staff at restaurants because they are stain resistant and can be wiped clean. This type of apron has large pockets and ties at the waist. Their black color also looks rather professional and fits well with uniforms.

A similar styled leather work apron is called a half apron and also ties around the waist and is worn for shop work. It has a row of pockets sewn on like to a tool belt which makes it handy for keeping track of small parts and tools while also providing protection to the worker.

Some leather work aprons also protect the chest area and are known as full aprons and come in two styles. The over-the-neck style has a strap which is worn behind the neck similar to a halter top and the cross-back style has two shoulder straps that cross in the back to help ensure the straps stay in place. These full leather aprons can be short or below the knee depending upon the job function demands. Depending upon the designer and purpose, these full aprons will have a variety of pockets in many locations or they chould have no pockets at all.

Leather work aprons cost around $50 for a half shop apron, up to $200 for a full cross-back that has buckled adjustable straps and rivets. The expense is well worth the price considering the protection these leather aprons provide. They will also last much longer than traditional aprons and stay nice looking since they can be wiped clean and are stain resistant.

Leather work aprons can be purchased from uniform supply companies that handle uniforms and clothing for professions besides nursing and other healthcare jobs. Many uniform companies only offer scrubs and accessories for the healthcare profession, so make sure to look for a company that services industrial workers as well. If you do not have such a uniform company close to you, you can order a leather work apron on the internet. When you order it online, you will have many companies to choose from and it lets you browse and pick out styles so the leather work apron is perfect for you.

The Impact Of Infidelity On The Family

July 29, 2008

by Alex Archer

The family unit is considered an ideal institution. A married man and woman, and their children, are the gold standard of a family. Couples in a loving married relationship can enjoy a fulfilling family life with their children. Infidelity, however, can upset the dynamics of a family unit.

Infidelity, adultery, cheating…the terms are all synonomous. Infidelity violates the vows taken by a married couple and destroys the mutual trust in a relationship. Often, the damage is so severe that it leads to a termination of the marriage.

The impact of infidelity on the family unit is devastating. the affected partner, upon discovering the affair, often experiences a variety of emotions including rejection, shock, anger, disappointment, and pain. The intensity of these feelings may be so severe that the affected partner finds they have ineffective coping mechanisms.

The affected partner immediately wants to quit the relationship. Mostly he/she cannot forgive the cheating partner. Women try to forgive the cheating husbands if the husbands repent the mistakes and promise to quit the illegal affair. Some women cannot leave their husbands as they love them so much and they want to give their husbands another chance to live a faithful married life with them.

Sometimes, however, the wounds from an illicit affair can run so deep that it can destroy a relationship. The affected partner may opt for separation or divorce, thereby breaking up the family and causing severe suffering for all members. Sadly, children who have had nothing to do with the incident are swept up in the after-effects.

When the infidelity occurs in a family, the peace disappears from the family. There are many quarrels, intense arguments between the life partners, which sometimes even lead to assault. The children undergo heavy mental agony and stress when they see their parents quarreling with each other. They feel very much unsecured.

The effects of infidelity on family are obviously reflected on the life of the children. The children want to live peacefully with their parents. They need both the father and the mother. They want to live with both of them in a same house. When the couple opts for a divorce or separation the children, it affects the children psychologically. They feel tensed and unsecured.

The impact of infidelity on the family unit is enormous. Children may have to live with either the father or the mother, creating a void in the children’s lives when they miss the love of the other parent. It is especially difficult for very young children, whose healthy development is dependent upon both parents being together. The impact of the separation also creates a stigma for the family among neighbors and friends.

Drug Abuse and Teens

July 29, 2008

by David B Smith

It is no secret that drug abuse is a horrible scourge in our community, and the mounting numbers of addicted teens is surely the most depressing feature of it.

Drugs affect a teen’s body in unique ways. Plus when people are becoming addicted as teenagers, it’s going to be much more difficult to maintain a clean and sober life as they become adults.

Young folks in our community are being aquainted with drugs at an increasingly young age. Studies show that by the time children get into 8th grade, approximately 35 percent have tried drugs. In some areas, the sum of persons who acquire a regular drug habit in their teens is as high as 20 percent!

Teenagers are also more inclined to slide from drug use to drug addiction because of their life conditions. Many teens get crushed by the everyday struggles of life. They have low self-esteem, labor under common juvenile problems, and find that they can’t express their feelings. They feel that they lack control over their existence. All of these contribute greatly to increasing drug use and eventually drug addiction.

Drugs kill the pain of a painful or routine life. They get rid of physical and mental pain by changing the abuser’s perception of the world they live in. Drugs make the addicted human being numb to the pain, despair, or isolation that they feel epitomises their life.

Do you suspect your teenager has a drug addiction? Some of the more common indicators of drug addiction in teens include:

Dramatic changes in conduct

Dull, glassy eyes

Excessive tiredness

Failing in university

Lying or pilfering

Isolation or loss of fulfillment in activities

What do you do when you feel your teenager is struggling with a drug addiction?

Firstly, listen to your gut instinct. If you feel there is a problem, there probably is. Find a safe time when you can talk freely with your child and be frank with them about your concerns. Try to be open-minded regarding what they are expressing to you and be understanding to their experience of their problems. Tell your teen what you are feeling about their drug addiction.

You are probably scared regarding what might happen to your teen. Try not to be judgmental or enraged: this will only cause them to shut down and back away. You can also talk about personal observations or experiences you might have had with drugs. While you may be hesitant to do this, it will make you more human in your teenager’s eyes.

Often, those closest to the teen (ie. the parents) find it easir to deny that their teen has a drug problem. Parents can’t afford to do this. On the contrary, if you, as a parent, truly love your teenager, it is essential that you get them help as soon as practical. Don’t give up, and try not to be disappointed if your initial attempts fail. Eventually, you will get through this and then you and your teenager can start dealing with drug addiction as a team.

Snap! Avoid Vacuum Cleaner Belt Breakages

July 29, 2008

by Kristina Brown

Snap! There goes another one. To avoid this from happening, I will go over a few tips that will help prevent belt breakage from occurring. Whether your vacuum cleaner is an upright or a canister with an electric power head, it most likely has a belt. Belts are simply bands of rubber made a specific size to work with specific machines. There are many different sizes for the thousands of vacuum cleaners that exist in households today.

A first aspect that should be checked when trying to correct vacuum cleaner belts breakage is incorrect fitting. Due to the many different varieties it is easy to install the wrong belt on your vacuum cleaner. An incorrect belt on a vacuum could either instantly break or be very loose; a loosely fitting belt prevents the brush roll from rotating correctly. For these reasons it is essential you have the correct belt for your vacuum cleaner.

Some machines say the belt number or style on the actual machine, but if it does not the actual belt itself should have the number printed right on it. Referring to your instruction manual may also help you find the proper belt number for your machine.

Proper installation of your belt is essential for a properly functioning machine and preventing belt breakage. Remember when installing your vacuum belt that the belt goes over the motor spindle and over the brush roll. A large amount of tension will be felt when installing a belt. This tension is typical and required and without this tension the brush roll would not rotate properly.

But why do vacuum belts break? Should I be worried if I am constantly breaking belts? Even if a belt is installed correctly a belt can still break regardless. Some belts can break just from constant machine use, but the most common cause of belt breakage is snagging. When a machine runs over the edge of a rug or a blanket, the belt gets jammed, overheated and instantly breaks. Belt breakage caused by snagging can happen over and over again and will only stop when you buy a new vacuum with a gear-driven belt system with electronic overload.

To prevent belt breakage it is remember to keep a few things in mind while vacuuming. First check to see if you have correctly installed the belt into the machine, and secondly check to see that the type of belt is appropriate to you machine. After an initial check of the whether or not you have the proper belt you can begin vacuuming. While vacuuming it is important to remember not to run over anything that cause snagging. Snagging an item such as a towel, a blanket, the edge of a carpet, or even the vacuum cleaners power cord, will put you at great risk of instantly incinerating your vacuum cleaner belt. Another tip to remember is to regularly change your vacuum cleaner belt every 6 months. Over time a belt becomes more elastic, and loose around the brush roll, consequently the brush roll will no longer turn at the appropriate revolutions per minute. The vacuum cleaner belt being loose causes a to vacuum not to function at an optimal level and can be avoided if the belt is changed every 6 months.

When looking for a particular belt for you vacuum cleaner the amount of choices may be overwhelming. There is a tremendous amount of belts available ranging from flat belts, round belts and cogged belts. Round belts are mostly found on older vacuum cleaners that have a fan system. Cogged belts are found on vacuums that have a feature called ‘electronic overload.’ ‘Electronic overload’ is when a machine shuts down entirely when there is a snag, and the user has the ability to simply turn the machine on and off or reset the machine in order to start vacuuming again with a non-broken belt. Cogged belts are the best, as they break the least often due to their rsistance to snagging, and are found on vacuum cleaners such as Miele, Simplicity, Dyson, and Sebo. Another great feature of a cogged belt system is that because of its design you do not have to buy a belt every 6 months. A tremendous saver of annoyance this feature should be seriously considered when going out to buy your subsequent vacuum cleaner.

Reasons for belt breakage are far from difficult to understand. With the tips such as buying a new vacuum with a proper belt system or correctly installing your belt, the solutions are even simpler.

Creating the Perfect Family Room

July 29, 2008

by Rob Carlton

When decorating your room you need to pay special attention to the colors that you use in the room. The design colors used on the walls can make a lot of difference to the overall appearance of the room. So how can you do this, well there are a number of good ways to choose the right colors for different rooms.

Listen to Family

When you are choosing colors you cannot choose whatever you like and simply assume that everyone else will love it. Design and colors are two very personal things. You must make sure you talk to everyone in your family to make sure that they like the colors that you are deciding to use.

Wall color is very important, it is very unlikely that everyone in your family will have the same opinion. You will have to make compromises somewhere. If there is a lot of conflict then start by making a list of people in your family and the colors that they like. Try to identify any similarities or if any of the colors can be used together and combined.

If you can?t choose just one color then you could consider using complementary colors to paint the room. You could for example paint the room using stripes of different colors that work well together, rather than just block color. The walls should be painted darker than the ceiling to prevent the room looking top heavy. You can work out whether the colors will work well together using paint chips to compare. If you like the color combination then why not use it?

The Rest of the Room

For the rest of the room you should choose colors that are complimentary to the wall color. You might want to choose furniture and window curtains that tie in nicely with the rest of the colors in the room. You might want to use contrasting colors to add some drama. If you are nervous about using too much color then you could consider painting just a single feature wall in your chosen color. This should then become the focal point of the room.

Color can make your room bigger

When you are choosing the colors for interior design you need to understand that color does affect the size of your room. If you use lots of dark colors then this can make your room look a lot smaller. Light colors have the opposite effect and make the room look much bigger. You should paint the ceiling lighter so that the ceiling looks higher. Dark colors make it seem very low.

It can be a scary task to choose a design color to use on walls, however it can be done. If you spend enough time thinking about it and consult with your family then you should be able to find a color that everyone is happy with.
