The Huge Digital Video Broadcasting Project

July 29, 2008

by Daniel j Holmlund

The world of the digital video broadcasting project is so large that it includes every continent.

The purpose of the project is to ensure that digital camcorders, televisions and other devices that are used to view video and broadcast signals, are all digital.Already, over 180 million receivers are in place, but some are still not prepared for this technological revolution.

The digital video broadcasting project’s main purpose is to ensure that the migration from digital to analogue goes smoothly. A good piece of the market share of the broadcasting world today is littered with analogue sets. If a person is not careful, then they will be left in the dark when it comes to seeing broadcasted programming in early 2009. The bright light in all of this is that today’s electronics are not analogue but digital, and they will not need a converter.

What is so good about the DVB project and its system? Well, for starters, it is an open system instead of a closed system. In other worlds, an open system allows for the integrations between computers and televisions, instead of a closed system that is only for television viewing.

Through digital broadcasting, the possibility of seeing live television in cars, trains, buses and even on hand held devices is possible. This is a wonderful option coming for those who cannot live without their television sets.

Change happens all the time and people cannot hide from progress.

Filters for Air Cleaning - Breathe Pure AIr

July 29, 2008

by Marsha Raven

Air cleaner filters are common devices used to clean and purify the air. They are commonly used to where there is need to recycle air. Their most popular use includes the removal of solid particles from the air so as to purify and clean the air. Air filters can clean the air of harmful microbes and bacteria as well as pollen mould and dust leaving the air cleaner and fresher.

Gas turbine engines especially need air cleaner filters as cleaner air makes them significantly more efficient.

Different systems and methods are used to remove harmful particles from the air. One of the popular methods employed is the use of fiber elements imbedded in the air filter. As air passes through dust and particles stick to the fiber and only clean air passes through.

There are other complex methods like the static electric charge method. In this method the air cleaner filters use static electricity to attract dust and other particles thereby filtering out clean air. Oil bath filters were used earlier but now due to sophistication in technology these have fallen out of favor.

There have continued to be advancements in the air cleaner filter industry brought about by advances in fluid science. With modern air cleaner filters air conditions and gas turbines work efficiently promoting healthy human health. Some popular air filter materials include cotton filters and paper foam filters. Air filters have to be cleaned and changed regularly and periodically to get optimum performance.

Air filters can be grouped as either class one or class two air filters. The classification is done based on their flammability. Class one air filters produce a negligible small amount of smoke when burnt. They do not become fuel when they come in contact with flame. Class two filters are the exact opposite as they readily become fuel when in contact with flame. While they burn they produce significant amount of smoke. A lot of research is still being done into the flammability of air filters.

Air filters come in various shapes and sizes to match the flow area of air. They are prone to get clogged with dirt from the air and so they should be cleaned or changed regularly. Clogging of air filters causes impure air and reduces the free flow of air along the passages.

For an engine this could mean serious drop in the performance of the engine. The size of the air filter also depends on the passage of air. There are different applications of the air filters but the most common application would be in internal combustion engines, gas turbines and air conditioners for both cars and rooms.

Paper is a very common air filter material used in cars. A reason for this is that they are cheap and easy to replace. They are also quite efficient and popular as automobile air cleaner filters. Foam elements wetted with oil is another popular automobile air cleaner filter material. In the past foam was popular as an air cleaner filter material but have been laid aside with air filter technological advancement.

Blu Ray Won the Format War vs HD DVD

July 29, 2008

by Ivan j Finch

For a while it looked like a bitter stand off in the Blu Ray vs HD DVD war, and one that could have spanned several years, when Microsoft Corp suggested they would consider putting Blu Ray technology in their Xbox 360’s. However, if you own a PlayStation3, then you’re no stranger to Blu Ray player technology. Disney and Warner Brothers signed exclusive deals with Sony’s Blu Ray Disc Association. Netflix and Best Buy said they would support only Blu Ray and even Walmart agreed to carry only Blu Ray discs. Toshiba finally conceded and now buyers are wondering, “Well, what’s the difference?”

The Blu Ray vs HD DVD format war finally ended when the entertainment giants changed sides and Toshiba announced that it would no longer be manufacturing the HD DVD player. Some buyers are left wondering: Is it really worth it?

First of all, when looking at the Blu Ray vs HD DVD specifics, you’ll notice that Blu Ray discs have far superior storage space. Traditionally, DVDs were first made to hold 4.7 GB of material on a single-layer, and later, the double layer boosted storage capacity up to 8.5 Gigs. HD DVD promised to more than triple that, delivering 15-30 GBs.

The next major difference between Blu Ray vs HD DVD was their alliances. Early on, motion picture companies, manufacturers and distributors understood that they would need to get aligned with the new technology. But could Blu Ray and HD DVD coexist? It would be costly, not to mention extremely confusing for consumers. When the DVD format first came out, there was no mistaking a VHS tape and a DVD on the shelves.

Unfortunately, the other major difference between the Blu Ray vs HD DVD players is price. You could purchase the XBox360 HD DVDs upgrade accessory for $130 and a stand-alone player for as low as $150. Sure, you could buy those super fancy combo players for nearly $1,000, but the average offering was as affordable as a regular DVD player.

The advent of high definition picture quality warranted this new medium because a two-hour movie in high def requires 22 GB of storage space, which is more than regular DVDs can handle.

Blu Ray players 2.0 will have more memory, moving from 256 MB to 1 GB, will include an ethernet port for connection to the internet and will offer online content capacity, also known as “BD-Live.” Therefore, holding off will give consumers more advantages than just a lower price.

So You Want A Ray Disc Player?

July 29, 2008

by Ivan j Finch

In the format war, the Blu Ray disc by Sony has triumphed over Toshiba’s HD DVDs. However, there are still many choices to make.

Do you want the Blu Ray disc player version 1.0, version 2.0, a Sony PlayStation3 with Blu Ray compatibility, or just a DVD up-converter? These days, buying your next movie player will be similar to purchasing a computer. You will have to decide what features are worth paying for and consider the idea that upgrades may be necessary in the future.

If you were an early bird buyer, then you have the original prototypical Blu Ray disc 1.0 player. “The earliest Blu-ray player, Profile 1.0, are dinosaurs already,” reports The Courant’s Kevin Hunt. “Consumers who dropped $1,500 on a player a year ago cannot update their players.”

The bare bones players offer the high-definition 1920×1080 pixels with superior coding and 7.0 surround-sound audio, but offer little in terms of extra features and menu options. Developers admit they probably should have just waited a year for the unveiling, but they were compelled to hurry up and compete in the Sony vs. Toshiba bidding war.

The 1.1 Blu Ray disc player quickly followed, featuring “BonusView” picture-in-picture commentary, like the surfing menus on Dish Network, secondary audio-video decoders and 256 MB of local on-disc storage.

BD-Live will allow viewers to chat in real time, get free movie ringtones and wallpaper for their cell phones, play online multiplayer games and upload custom audio commentary from directors, producers and actors. Sony recently announced two new Blu Ray players with 2.0 capacities: the BDP-S350 (available this summer for $399) and the BDP-S550 (available in the fall for $499). They also said that the BR 2.0’s will be able to be upgraded to the latest version via the internet, so eager buyers will be rewarded.

To offset the cost of upgrading, Blu Ray disc retailers are cutting prices to entice buyers. Sony announced that the new disc players will be priced between $400 and $500, but Best Buy is offering two free Ray discs with the purchase of a new Panasonic 1080p player and Amazon is offering 50% off select titles. There are over 500 titles currently available in Blu Ray release, with many more Blu Ray titles on the way.

Digital Video Editing Tools

July 29, 2008

by Daniel j Holmlund

One of the coolest things that a person can do with their computer and their digital camcorder is digital video editing. Many people, more than likely, have a good amount of videos just waiting to be edited.

One thing that a person can do with editing is to create a special video, with all the bits and pieces of information stored together. The key is to have the right tools in order to edit these precious memories.

One of the main components to making digital video editing work is a good camcorder. In order to stay on top of the changing world of camcorders, a person should only invest in one of the many digital camcorders, available instead of an analog one.

Many good camcorders are in the price range of four hundred dollars, but if a person is serious about editing, then they should only think about the ones that are between five and twelve hundred dollars. The higher end models will give a novice editor an optical stabilization, which is better than digital stabilization because it balances the images internally instead of with a manual trigger.

The other main tool that will be needed for editing is a computer. In order to create great videos, the computer needs at least thirty gigs of space available. This will allow a person to create a video that lasts approximately one hour.

Also needed for editing will be an eight meg graphics card. Otherwise, the video quality will be dull. Even the new Macs will be able to create great videos as long as a G4 is present. All a person will need for either a Mac or PC is the right video editing software, such as Adobe Premiere Elements 4 or Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 11, to name only two of the many choices available.

When people take part in digital video editing, they are taking control of their precious memories instead of leaving them to someone who does editing for just a paycheck. This process can be made easier as long as a person has the right tools. This includes one of the many digital video recorders, a good computer and top notch software. Armed with these items, a person can create memories that will last a lifetime.

Questions and Answers - Radar Detector

July 29, 2008

by Todd j Scott

If you have ever been pulled over for traveling above the speed limit then you know how important a radar detector can be. These tiny devices can greatly reduce your chance of getting pulled over for speeding but do you know how they work? It is one of the technological advances that we seem to take for granted. Most of us have no clue beyond plugging them into the cigarette lighter and mounting them on the dashboard.

But are the radar detectors legal? How do they work? Those are just a few of the questions that you should have when it comes to radar detectors. This is your lucky day.

These questions and answers cover the basics of radar detectors and hopefully by the end you will have some idea of why a radar detector can mean the difference between a speeding ticket and getting to keep your money and your insurance rates low.

LIDAR detectors are not used as much as radar detectors because of their cost and their inability to catch all beams directed at them.

Will a radar detector get me out of a ticket? No, a radar detector may not get you out of a ticket. It just depends on whether or not the police officer tagged you with his radar gun before you had the chance to slow down. It most certainly will not get you out of a ticket if you happen to live in a state that forbids the use of radar detectors. You can most assuredly count on receiving a ticket at that point when the police officer pulls you over and discovers you using a radar detector.

What are some brands of radar detectors? There are several different brands of radar detectors on the market currently. You can choose from a Beltronics BEL RX54 radar detector or you can go with the Whistler XTR-690 Radar/Laser Detector. The choice is up to you and it may come down to what guarantees the company offers along with the price.

Can a police officer tell if I’m using a radar detector? Unless the police officer sees the radar detector on your dashboard then chances are good that he or she will not know if you are using a radar detector unless they pull you over for speeding. Then of course they will see the radar detector in your vehicle. Hopefully you do not live in or are traveling in a state that forbids the use of radar detectors.

I Was Burned On HD DVD: Now What?

July 29, 2008

by Ivan j Finch

“The format war was confusing for buyers,” says a Samsung insider, when talking about Sony Blu Ray format vs. Toshiba/Microsoft’s HD DVD. When the dust settled, 1.3 million consumers had dropped hundreds of dollars on an obsolete machine. Despite being able to play old DVDs and purchase roughly 386 titles on HD DVD, people won’t be able to get any new movies coming out. “Now there are still HD DVD discs that people want to read; but no one wants to write to that format,” the Samsung insider revealed.

They were told that new competitors would change the way consumers saw/heard movies in their own living rooms. However, Sony’s Bluray player won the war in a surprisingly short amount of time. Despite HD DVD’s short-lived life span, retailers are offering some reprieve for disgruntled shoppers.

Best Buy is offering a $50 gift card to people who purchased an HD DVD player or HD DVD Xbox360 unit before February 23rd. The gift cards should all be automatically mailed out by May 1st to “Reward Zone” customers or people who bought warranties. Other customers must call 1-888-BestBuy and have a receipt or credit card information ready, as proof of purchase.

Best Buy offers a trade-in center to scrap the old player, although you will not be getting a particularly good return on your investment. For example, a Toshiba HD XA2 unit, originally priced at $1,000, may fetch you $148.50 and HD DVDs $2.70 each.

We at Amazon.com value our customer relationships more than anything and would like to support customers who purchased these players by offering a credit good for $50 off any products sold by Amazon.com.” Any HD DVD purchase bought before February 23rd is eligible for the refund and the product can be turned in any time before April 9, 2009. It should also be noted that Amazon has consumer-friendly Blu ray sales as well.

What about all those XBOX360 users who hoped HD DVD would make their machines more updated and with better quality? Microsoft hasn’t exactly been bashful about their bitterness and contempt for the Blu Ray disc format.

Customers understood that there were two competing formats and understood that one of them would probably prevail, so they made the decision to go with HD DVD.” Despite their lack of sympathy, at least confidence in the generosity of retail giants can continue. Though it has cost retailers thousands, if not millions, they have done the right thing to keep consumers happy and coming back to the store for Blu Ray media, if nothing else.

How a GPS Unit Can Help Your Vacation Go Smoother

July 11, 2008

by Justin Clark

Recently, my family and I took a lovely trip to the State of Florida. We were there to go to a wedding, visit family, enjoy the beaches and other local attractions. To get around, we realized we’d either have to have a bunch of maps all printed off, or we’d have to rent or buy a GPS unit.

For ease of travel, we decided we’d use a GPS rather than maps. We also decided we’d buy a GPS rather than rent one because rental rates run $10 a day or so, so buying would save us money in the long run. We’d also have it to use on other trips as well.

We searched around for the best machine and best deal. We ended up buying a Garmin 550c off of eBay. It was a fantastic deal and had a bunch of cool new features that some of the older brands didn’t have.

That new little GPS really helped us get around! In fact, it did more that just help us find our way. It also helped us locate new places to go! When we turned it on, it’d figure out automatically where we were and would then give us lists of all kinds of things around that we might want to go to such a gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, beaches, etc.

My sister came on the trip as well, bringing her husbands new Magellan GPS unit that he got for Christmas. Unfortunately, her Magellan didn’t work nearly as well as our Garmin. It often couldn’t figure out where she was and got her off course quite a bit.

So, we learned from the experience that it definitely pays to get a good quality brand. Not only did it save us time and frustration, but it also saved us gas money since we weren’t taking oodles of wrong turns all the time!

Getting a GPS unit for any of your navigational needs is a fantastic idea. We’ve really enjoyed ours and highly recommend them to anyone who asks!

Getting Mobile with Mobile Technologies

June 14, 2008

by Mikael PJ Erikson

Sometimes life comes at you fast, especially in the realm of technology where there are terms that are continuously flying at you. Some have dual meanings, such as mobile technologies.

Mobile technology can refer to a dual-action processor and it can refer to the mobile gadgets, such as PDAs, pocket PCs and Smartphones. We are living in a mobile age and if you are going to stay in contact with your home and work, then you must be able to be contacted no matter where you are.

CNET is probably one of the most valuable tools you can use when it comes time to buy your hand held device. They offer both editorial reviews and user reviews of different products that are currently on the market, along with reviews of older pieces of technology. One example of mobile technologies is the hand held devices produced by Hewlett Packard. One in particular is the HP iPAQ Pocket PC HX4700. This device is top of the line and is currently being sold and manufactured around the world. Users gave the HX4700 a 7.3 and the editorial staff gave it a review of 7.9, which are both excellent ratings.

Almost all reviews come from its outstanding performance and speed. The HX4700 is operating on Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Edition and has the capabilities of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, along with a 624 MHz XScale processor from Hewlett Packard. The four inch screen is unbelievable with its color pixels and it features a replaceable battery to ensure that documents and other information are not lost when the battery dies. It also features a large quantity of memory and is equipped with Outlook, Word, Excel and Internet Explorer.

The downside to the HX4700, is in it’s size. It is a bit bulky, but is still a very sleek pocket PC. There is a small handicap present when the user first operates the new touchpad and this can translate into poor gaming, for those that use their pocket PC for gaming in particular. If you are in the market for a pocket PC for gaming purposes, then you may want to turn to Dell’s Axim.

Of course there are other mobile technologies on the market today that can be bought for far less than the HX4700’s price tag. However, few can match its performance power. But one can!

There are other mobile technologies on the market today that can be bought for far less than the HX4700’s price tag. However, few can match its performance power. One of its chief competitors is Apple’s new iPhone, which users have fallen in love with for its extra capabilities, such as the use of an iPod and a gaming Smartphone. Whatever you decide is up to your own unique preferences and your own personal needs.
