Installing Wood Floors? Consider Bamboo

July 29, 2008

by Linden Walhard

Are you looking into installing wood flooring in your home? There are a lot of options to choose from and a lot of it depends on your tastes and budget. One type of flooring that is overlooked due to it?s non-traditional reputation is bamboo flooring. When people think about bamboo flooring they think bamboo mats and something weak and cheap. In reality, it is just the opposite. Bamboo flooring is smooth, visually appealing and strong.

Bamboo is a very strong material and is surprisingly stronger than other types of wood flooring. It is much stronger (and visually appealing) than linoleum and smoother than traditional stone or marble flooring.

There is solid bamboo or you can find flooring that is engineered so that the bamboo is veneer mounted on plywood to make it even stronger and less expensive. Just as with other wood flooring, the bamboo is stained and then given a coat of sealant such as urethane.

Installation of this type of flooring is the same as with other types of wood flooring. They are usually nailed and/or glued in place to the sub floor. There are also tongue and groove flooring that works much like laminate so the floor is not actually attached to the sub flooring.

Why choose bamboo? Not only is it strong and aesthetically appealing but it?s also environmentally friendly. Hardwoods such as walnut and oak can take generations or at least many years to grow to maturity. Even with replanting, these trees can?t grow fast enough to replenish the amount of trees that are being cut down. Bamboo on the other hand grows much faster and only takes five years to reach maturity for use in furnishings and flooring. There is no need for replanting since new growth happens automatically after it is harvested.

Care for your bamboo floor may take a bit more upkeep since it is a lighter material and therefore is more prone to staining and water damage. Dust and dirt can be removed with a dust mop or non abrasive broom. A damp cloth should be used to clean up spills and then dried with a towel. For regular cleaning, use a vinegar solution of four parts vinegar to one part water. Don?t soak the mop; only dampen it so as not to get the floor too wet. Clean the floor in sections and then dry the section immediately after mopping it.

After a while of use, your bamboo floor may become dull. If so, you can have it buffed, finished and polished to restore its shine.

A bamboo floor is not only a beautiful wood flooring option but it?s strong, easy to install and environmentally friendly.

Summer Camps for Teenagers - Are They Worth The Money?

July 29, 2008

by Emma Gibson

It’s that time of year to begin the search for summer camps for teenagers. School is out, and the summer looms ahead for all the children. However, teenagers seem to have the most difficult time keeping occupied through the summer months.

There are many summer camps available, and finding the right one may seem like an uphill battle for most parents. Unlike the old days, when kids attended a camp to learn how to swim, or canoe, and basically get acquainted with nature, there are now specific camps for different things. These include band camp, cheerleading camp, and tennis camp, just to name a few.

For budding scientists, there are special science camps organized for the summer. Your teenager will meet other like minded teenagers. Their interest in science related subjects will allow for bonding and possibly lasting friendships. Scientific experiments and discussions of theories are encouraged, allowing this special teenager to not only learn, but share knowledge, as well.

There are summer camps for teenagers interested in space travel. These allow a simulated space flight experience. Not only is it fun for the kids, but it can be a deciding factor for whether or not an astronaut career is in the future. One drawback to the space camps is that they are usually rather pricey as well as difficult to get into.

There are also many different sports related summer camps for teenagers. You can find them for all popular sports such as baseball, basketball, or golf. They even have gymnastics camps and scuba camps for teenagers. It is just a matter of deciding what interests your teenagers the most.

If your teenager is interested in improving his skills so he can make the football team when the next school year comes around, he might want to attend one of the football summer camps for teenagers. This will give him a great workout as well as helping him focus on the position he wants to try out for.

For the teenager who may want to join professional golf one day, there are summer camps to help move him in the right direction. Some of these camps even get golf pros to hold seminars for the kids. This not only aids them in reaching their goals, but it’s pretty exciting to meet and learn from a real celebrity.

It is not as hard as you may think to find the right summer camp for your teenagers. Most schools and many community service offices have a list of the different camps available. It may only take a short phone call to be able to access this list.

Michelangelo Was A Native Of Tuscany

by Ray Walberg

Most town halls are non-descript buildings where bureaucratic drones work. Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio is definitely not that kind of town hall. It’s a work of art.

The Palazzo Vecchio was once the home of Cosimo Medici, one of history’s great power brokers. Construction began on this edifice in 1299 and it was not finished until the 16th century. In the interim, it was expanded and revised so that now it is one of the world’s great art storehouses. While it is a functioning city hall, most of its visitors come for the art.

Be sure to pick up a guide book to the facility. You don’t want to miss any of the fascinating details about what you will see.

Among the treasures to be scene here is the Salone dei Cinquecento, once Cosimo I’s grand hall. This room has some beautiful frescoes that honor his conquests. Cosimo’s wife, Eleonora of Toledo’s apartments also have lovely artwork as does her chapel.

Florence has a long relationship with Austria’s Hapsburg dynasty. Cosimo de Medici married the sister of the Hapsburg Emperor Maximilian. References to this relationship abound in many frescos and tapestries that can be seen throughout the facility.

Florentines in the city’s golden age were very interested in Greek and Roman mythology. The Hercules Room has a fabulous ceiling that depicts this mythical hero’s adventures. The Jupiter room has wonderful tapestries on the walls and an imposing tribute to that deity on its ceiling. Be sure to see the Room of Cybele to see beautiful cabinets of tortoise shell and bronze. The Ceres room houses many beautiful tapestries.

How many town halls do you know of that have artworks by the great masters? The Palazzo Vecchio has a replica of Michelangelo’s David. Michelangelo was a Florentine and there are many tributes here to the city’s most famous native son. There is also a fresco by Bronzino from the 16th century.

These are just some of the many artworks to be seen here. But if you’ve had your fill of art, there is still a lot to see. The courtyard has a fountain with putti and dolphins that is a delightful sight. The water for the fountain comes all the way from the Boboli Gardens, quite an impressive engineering feat. Go up to the Terrazzo di Saturno on the second floor for a wonderful view of the complex. Stop in the Sala delle Carte and see the collection of historic globes and maps painted on leather that depict the world as it was known in 1563.

Visiting Tuscany’s Palazzo Vecchio can easily take an entire day, as you investigate everything from its enormous dome to its smallest corner. Your visit there will surely be your most memorable to any city hall.

Get Back With Your Ex: The First Steps

July 29, 2008

by Marc Sandford

The dreaded day has finally arrived, your ex and you have broken up. What should you do now? This article will lay out the next crucial steps to take right after the breakup.

1.) The very first item for you to deal with is panic and stress. Your efforts at getting your ex back will be counter productive if you are stressed out. Don’t bring up your ex’s faults with your friends.

This type of discussion only serves to strengthen negative feelings. Talk of this sort will make your friends feel uncomfortable. Their suggestions will be of questionable value if they’re inexperienced at dealing with relationship problems.

2.) This problem isn’t going to repair itself. You will have to put forth the effort to change things for the better. A cool head will be needed to do this.

Your first instinct after the breakup will be to patch things up as fast as possible. There is no quick fix to relationship problems. As a matter of fact, you should let things cool off for about a month.

It helps tremendously if the breakup occurred in a non threatening way. Some time will be needed for reflection, to get things into perspective. Understanding the reasons behind the breakup is essential before any attempt at contacting her.

3.) Establish a friendship with her. This may be somewhat difficult but it is well worth the effort since it allows for further contact with her. The current status of your relationship is always defined by what was said during the last contact. Her present thoughts about you were molded by that last contact you had with her.

Do the fun things with her that you did back in the beginning, before you had sex. This will serve to remind her of the good side of your relationship. She will understand that she’ll be giving this fun aspect up if she leaves you.

4.) Be very careful when drinking alcohol. It will distort your common sense and judgement. The consumption of alcohol late at night often causes a person to give their ex a phone call.

No one is happy about getting a phone call late at night. This is particularly true if it’s their ex on the phone. Because the alcohol will loosen up your inhibitions, things will be said that will make matters worse.

5.) Get out and have fun. I know that it’s easier said than done, but it has great therapeutic value. This is the time to renew the old friendships and make a few new ones. Living life again will give you a more balanced perspective and help lessen the pain of separation.

Home Improvement For Your Bathroom

July 29, 2008

by Clinton Maxwell

In the current depressed housing market, many people are considering home improvement projects to their current home, rather than selling it. One potential area for home improvement that is often overlooked, involves upgrading “the smallest room in the house”. That’s right, the bathroom.

People often overlook overdoing the bathroom because it is so basic: After all, it’s where we take a bath right? Not necessarily. In the U.S., there are three types of bathrooms: A full bath legally must have a bathtub, shower, toilet and sink. A three-quarter batheroom must have a shower, sink and toilet, which a half bathroom, or powder room, only has a sink and toilet.

There are many projects that could be done to improve any of these rooms. These projects and be done to make the room more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing to the homeowner. For example, many people install new window treatments or an attractive lightnig fixture. Of course, many projects are just done out of necessity: Toilets, sinks, showers and bath tubs all have moving parts that wear out just like everything else. And, of course, accidents happen. Things break and need to be replaced.

Other projects could be done to make the room safer and accessible for disabled and/or elderly family members. Grab bars in the shower or by the toilet are important fixtures, as are non-slip strips and brighter lighting and bath seats.

Other projects can be done to improve a home’s resale value. In these days of environmental consciousness, many people are installing water-saving toilets and water fixtures and light bulbs that are more energy efficient. People still like luxuries and are opting to put in a hot tub for their own private spa.

Home improvement projects can be do-it-yourself ventures, such as installing fans, medicine cabins, vents, vanities, lights and/or shower doors. Often a new coat of paint is all the room needs for a new look. These are relatively easy projects and are fairly inexpensive. The internet and your local home improvement store has a lot of information how to do these yourself. They can also help you replace faucets, repair or change the flooring or replace kitchen cabinets. Of course, there is always routine maintenance to be done to keep all equipment functioning well.

Larger projects may require professional help. Replacing or repairing a tub, installing a whirlpool tub or completely redesigning the room are best done by professionals or you risk making major mistakes that could cost big money. For example, installing a bathtub/shower insert wrong could make the room aesthetically ugly and hurt your home’s resale value.

So, if you are considering remodeling your home, don’t overlook that very important little room. Little changes can make a big difference in your home.

Use These Home Design Tips for Your Dream Home

July 29, 2008

by Johnathan Bakers

Many television shows these days involve the creation of “dream homes” for real families. These shows have inspired many of us to create our own dream homes. But do you have to be an interior designer to create one?

Don’t let the plethora of home design experts intimidate you. You can create a dream home yourself. It’s really not all that frightening and in fact, it’s rather fun.

In order to create your dream home, your first step is to have the dream. That is, you have to figure out what you want? Are you planning to create your dream home in your current house? If so, what needs to change? What colors do you like — earth tones, pastels, dramatic colors? What styles appeal to you (and your family if that applies) — country, traditional, Asian, contemporary, Southwest? Does your current home need more space in some rooms? Is it warm or cool enough? Is the furniture tired?

The next step is look at what others have done. You can do this in many ways. The reason there are so many home magazines is precisely because people are looking for ideas. Clip out the ideas that you like and want to try. Be sure to look at the buyer’s guide to get contact information for the manufacturers.

Another fun way to get ideas is to go to home improvement shows. These feature many vendors who will have displays offering many ideas. There are often presentations on new ways to use specific elements. Home shows are easy and fun days out.

An even more fun way to get ideas is to go out and see actual homes. A lot of people love taking Sunday drives to visit open houses. They are not necessarily looking to buy a new home but they are looking for ideas to apply to their own spaces. Quite often real estate agents employ people to “stage” a property in its best light. steal their ideas and make your own home shine. Visit a home development to see what is new on the market.

As you determine what you want, you may decide that it is time to change to a new residence. Whether you want to improve your current space or buy or build a new home, it is important to have a clear picture of what you want. If you choose to hire a professional to do the work, show the professional exactly what you want. You will be more satisfied and the contractor or agent may be able to suggest tips to realize your dream at a lower cost.

By following these steps, you will have fun and ultimately end up with your own dream home, not someone else’s. Enjoy the process of watching your dream come true.

Guide to Installing Beautiful Pergo Flooring

July 29, 2008

by Clinton Maxwell

Many people think about installing Pergo floors, these are made from very high quality materials and fit together using a tongue and groove system. This makes sure that these flooring panels are installed accurately, it?s possible to install them yourself or with professional assistance. If you need a professional then speak to your retailer and they will be able to suggest an installer.

Before you install the floor you need to work out how many packs of flooring you need, and which accessories you will need to buy. This is easier than you might think, you can find room size calculators on the internet which can be used to work out the amount of flooring you need.

If you want to install the Pergo flooring by yourself then you will need to make sure you buy everything you need. These should be available from the same place which you buy your flooring from. Pergo floors are very high quality and will last for a very long time. They come with several unique features which make installation so much easier.

- Pergo Glue ? You must use the official glue in order for your warranty to be valid - Installation Kit ? This includes everything you will need to install your floors, including spacers which makes sure your joints are as tight as possible. - Pull bar ? this helps you to install the panels easily - Under floors ? These can level the floor out so that the floor can be installed properly - Floor clamps ? These make laying floors much easier and will make it last longer - Pergo Sealant ? To put around the gap around the outside of your floors - Pergo Putty ? This can be used to repair the damage to floors such as scratches and chips. Damage can sometimes occur when the flooring is installed. - Installation straps ? You don?t need these however these do make it much easier.

You need to think of a couple of things before you start installing your Pergo flooring. Pergo flooring is only designed for use inside your house. It cannot be fixed down to your sub floor, it must only be fitted as a floating floor. This needs to have a big enough gap for movement.

You must consider changes in the flooring when the weather changes. This could change the distance between walls, and pipes and the flooring panels. In normal environments you should leave a ?? expansion gap, however you should consider making this bigger if you live in very humid areas. It?s very important to stick to this distance in corners and around doorways,

Before fitting the flooring you should leave the flooring panels in their packages to allow them time to adjust. You should let them rest for around 48 hours in normal environments, in humid or dry environments allow longer, perhaps as long as 96 days. You should make sure that the temperature is stable

Pergo floors can easily be installed over the top of any existing flooring. It is important that you make sure that you lay proper Pergo Underlayment foam to ensure a high quality floor is installed. You always need to install a waterproof barrier.

Is alcoholism a disease?

July 29, 2008

by Ed Philips

Is alcoholism a disease? Most people don’t believe so, because it simply doesn’t have that kind of aspect one assumes a disease would have. Diseases have to do with germs, not substances, right? Wrong. Alcoholism certainly is a disease, and has been recognized so by medical professionals and the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.

Because of this, nine out of ten primary care physicians in the United States fail to correctly diagnose alcohol abuse even when their adult patients present classic early symptoms, according to a survey by the Center on Addiction and Drug Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University. The doctors responding to the survey cited lack of adequate training in medical school, residency or continuing medical education courses; skepticism about treatment effectiveness; discomfort discussing substance abuse, time constraints and patient resistance.

That is an example of a simple mental obsession — a thought process over which you have no control. Such is the nature of the disease of alcoholism. When the drinking “song” starts playing in the mind of an alcoholic, he is powerless. He didn’t put the song there and the only way to get it to stop is to take another drink. The problem is the alcoholic’s mental obsession with alcohol is much more subtle than a song playing in his mind. In fact, he may not even know it’s there. All he knows is he suddenly has an urge to take a drink — a physical compulsion to drink.

The severity of these withdrawal symptoms is usually dependent upon how “chemically dependent” the chronic drinker has become. Those who drink heavily on a daily basis of course have developed a high level of dependency, but even those who drink daily, but not heavily and those who drink heavily but not daily, can also be chemically dependent upon alcohol.

The scenario has been played over and over many times. After a particularly damaging or embarrassing binge, the hungover person will make an oath to himself and others to drink “never again” and quite often is sincere about quitting. But with the onset of withdrawal symptoms, also comes the “craving” for more alcohol. The body is telling the drinker that it “needs” alcohol. As the physical symptoms of withdrawal begin to increase, taking another drink simply becomes less painful than not taking one — or so it seems at the time.

There is no way to predict how any individual will respond to quitting. If you plan to stop drinking and you have been drinking for years, or if you drink heavily when you do drink, or even if you drink moderately but frequently, you should consult a medical professional before completely cutting yourself off from alcohol.

Some of the psychological symptoms are: feelings of jumpiness or nervousness; feelings of shakiness; anxiety; irritability or easily excited; emotional volatility, rapid emotional changes; depression; fatigue; difficulty with thinking clearly; having bad dreams. Some of the physical symptoms are: headache - general, pulsating; sweating, especially the palms of the hands or the face; nusea; vomiting; loss of appetite; insomnia, sleeping difficulty; paleness; rapid heart rate (palpitations); eyes, pupils different size (enlarged, dilated pupils); clammy skin; abnormal movements; tremor of the hands; involuntary, abnormal movements of the eyelids.

Wrinkle Creams: Are They Really Effective?

July 29, 2008

by Leanne Wumoult

The question, “Do wrinkle creams really work?” is something that has been argued throughout the years. As soon as wrinkle creams were introduced into the market, people began asking this question.

You will have to make a couple of considerations before this question can be answered properly. There are some facts that should be known before you can understand how and why wrinkle creams may or may not work.

To find out the truth about wrinkle cream, you can buy all the wrinkle creams available on the market. Try them and see if they do solve the problem of wrinkles. If that sounds too much work, you can continue reading this article and find out now.

To really answer the question, we should fully understand the problem of wrinkles. Just continue reading, and you will learn how wrinkles are formed, how they can be fixed, and what you should look for in a wrinkle cream.

So How Do We Get Wrinkles?

Let us first look at the causes of wrinkles. Many factors affect the smoothness, elasticity, and vibrancy of our skin. The most common cause of wrinkles is simply aging.

As we age, our skin produces less collagen. Collagen is a natural protein manufactured by our skin. It gives younger skin its smooth, firm appearance. When we grow older, our decreased collagen production usually leads to dull, saggy skin. We also regenerate our skin cells at a lower rate.

But other factors can speed up the aging process. When skin is exposed to too much dryness or sunlight, wrinkles can form. The impact of these natural causes can be lessened through good skin care. There are also some unnatural causes of premature wrinkling.

Certain lifestyle choices can lead your skin to wrinkle prematurely. Smoking and not getting enough rest can cause your skin to age before its time. If you are under a great deal of stress and not getting the proper rest your skin will pay the price.

What Should Be In A Wrinkle Cream?

The ingredients a wrinkle cream will determine if wrinkle cream works. The basic things wrinkle creams must have are moisturizing ingredients and sunscreen. As you have just found out; the skin’s ability to retain water weakened as it ages. That is why it is important for the anti wrinkle cream to be able to compensate this lack of moisture.

The sunscreen is very important to protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Your wrinkle cream should also contain vitamins to nourish the skin as well as antioxidants. The antioxidants can do a great deal to repair the skin’s cells.

If a wrinkle cream is to be effective, it must contain these ingredients. It should also be right for your type of skin. A good protection for your skin with a sunscreen is also essential to prevent further damage. A good wrinkle cream will not eliminate the wrinkles that are already on your skin. It can reduce their appearance and hold them off for a few more years.

So now you know that wrinkle creams do work - if you choose one that suits your needs. If you have questions or concerns, see your dermatologist. They will be able to recommend the best product for your skin.
