Ideas to Naming A New Business

March 21, 2008

The perfect name for your business may seem like it is hard to find, but with some thought, you can develop a name brand that will be very recognizable. Sit down and consider how others will respond to your name. I recommend even asking people around what they like better between a number of choices that you have.

The Search For A Business Name

Trying to figure out the right business name can be tough. It takes a lot of thought to getting it right the first time, because if you mess up as you come out of the gate, it is hard to get your horse back in the race.

The business name that you choose should not exist in isolation, but as part of an overall strategy. Naming a business is not only where you start as the business’s founder, but also where the consumer starts. Choose the wrong name and your business will falter.

How to Brand Your Business

Think it over. What do you want to really say with your business name? What is it supposed to communicate? I believe that in order to be most effective, your company name should support the key elements of what your business does. To me, having a good business name is the purest form of advertising. Every time you say the name of the business it gives an opportunity to make an impression.

Brainstorming can be an excellent way to generate good ideas. I like to use the branch method of brainstorming for 10 minutes. Then I go over my ideas and group them. I then take combinations and even partial word combos and see what I can find. Important also to me is whether or not the domain name is available for the business, because I want it to be unique and to be able to have the .com address for my business name.

You can hire a professional service to help you come up with a business name, but I would have to say that most people can develop a good business name if they think about it for a while. So don’t fret, just get busy developing your own business name.
