Getting The Right Name Is Crucial For A New Business

May 31, 2008

Business names are like noses. Almost everyone is born with one, but they are not all made equal. Some are big and ugly while others are seemingly perfect. LOL The fact is this… if you want to get ahead in the business world, then you need to nail it on a business name because it is how you are branded from then on.

The Search For A Business Name

Think about it for a minute… Your business is not just the products you sell, the people who work for you, or even the physical location where it is held. Your business has those things, but the most important goal in the public eye is perception. How people see it. Getting the right suggested business names is the first step to projecting the right image for your business.

The business name that you choose should not exist in isolation, but as part of an overall strategy. Naming a business is not only where you start as the business’s founder, but also where the consumer starts. Choose the wrong name and your business will falter.

How to Brand Your Business

Everyone has an opinion on how to best name a business. Some business experts believe that the name should be abstract, while others believe it should paint a vivid picture of what it does, and others like the “cute” approach in using coined names. Coined names are made-up words. Any name can be made to work, but there are definitely benefits to picking the right name.. I happen to be in the camp that likes to paint the vivid picture of what a business does.

Having Difficulty Coming Up With A Business Name?

In the end, sometimes good business name suggestions come from the most unlikely places. Our foray with the marketing and advertising agency was fruitless, and in the end we had just managed to waste several thousand dollars on nothing. In desperation, I turned to some very unlikely people to give me business name suggestions. Since we would be a toy distributor, I turned to my younger son and his friends. They came up with the perfect name. So be open minded. The business name is something that can make or break your business.

I would not recommend making your first or last name a part of the business name. Like Joe’s Plumbing. What if you sell the business? Think about “Roto Rooter?” That name says it all and is franchisable. For a website design business does “Chandler Web Design” sound better or does “Website Interactive?” It is easy to see that the later does. Also don’t make the name hard to spell or remember. Think about it. You will have to use this name all the time.
